Coefficient

A coefficient is a number which multiplies a variable, or a product of variables.

In a polynomial, each term has a coefficient.

Example:

3 x 2 5 x y + y 2 + 0.2 x + 39

Here, the coefficient of the x 2 term is 3 .

The coefficient of the x y term is 5 .

The coefficient of the y 2 term is 1 (note that the number 1 need not be written).

The coefficient of the x term is 0.2 .

The coefficient of the y term is 0 (since the y term doesn't show up at all).
