People: Images of Founding Fathers

Rare Images of Early American People

The people on these pages are those who were in the vanguard of the founding of the United States. Benjamin Franklin is shown sitting with a sheaf of papers....and with pen in hand about to write a letter, one might imagine, to a friend or associate.

There's Tom Jefferson in the dress of the day. The Jefferson whose skills at writing gave us the Declaration of Independence. John Adams, our second President, books at hand, may be about to pen another letter to his wife Abigail. And Sam Adams, a firebrand of the Revolution, standing with his walking stick.

These are some of the people who were witness to the founding of the republic.

Rare Images of Early American People

Here we see George Washington as he appeared in 1775 and also as a young officer in the Virginia reserves. We find him sitting for a portrait... and see his life mask which shows us as he actually appeared at the age of 53. Doesn't exactly look like that face on the dollar bill, does it? There's also John Hancock, whose signature adorns the U.S. Constitution as the first signer of that historic document. And John Marshall, who shaped American constitutional law, dressed in his judicial robes as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
