What Is Division?

Division is splitting a number into equal parts. It's the opposite of multiplication. If you have 12 cookies and want to share them with 4 friends, you divide the cookies so everyone gets the same amount.

How Division Works

The number being divided is the "dividend." The number you divide by is the "divisor." The answer is called the "quotient."

You can write it as \(12 \div 4 = 3\).
