Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
Connecting Fractions, Decimals, and Percents
Fractions, decimals, and percents are three ways to represent parts of a whole. Understanding how to switch between them helps you solve many types of math problems.
Fractions
A fraction like \(\frac{3}{4}\) means 3 out of 4 equal parts.
Decimals
Decimals use base 10 to show parts of a whole, like 0.75.
Percents
Percents are out of 100. The word "percent" literally means "per hundred," so 75% is 75 out of 100.
Changing Between Forms
- To turn a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
- To make a decimal into a percent, multiply by 100.
- To turn a percent into a fraction, write it over 100 and simplify.
Where Do We Use These?
Shopping discounts, test scores, and measuring ingredients all use fractions, decimals, or percents!
Examples
0.5, 50%, and \(\frac{1}{2}\) all mean the same thing.
If you scored 18 out of 20 on a quiz, that's \(\frac{18}{20} = 0.9 = 90%\).
In a Nutshell
Fractions, decimals, and percents are different ways of describing parts of a whole.
