Every sentence you read or write is made up of essential pieces called parts of speech. Understanding them helps you craft clear and powerful sentences!
The Eight Parts of Speech
- Nouns: Name people, places, things, or ideas.
- Pronouns: Take the place of nouns.
- Verbs: Show action or state of being.
- Adjectives: Describe or modify nouns.
- Adverbs: Modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
- Prepositions: Show relationships between words.
- Conjunctions: Join words or groups of words.
- Interjections: Express emotion or surprise.
Constructing Sentences
Sentences are more than just a string of words. They have a structure:
- Subject: Who or what the sentence is about.
- Predicate: What the subject does or is.
- Objects and Modifiers: Add detail and meaning.
Types of Sentences
- Simple: One independent clause.
- Compound: Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction.
- Complex: An independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
