What Are Context Clues?
Context clues are hints within a sentence or paragraph that help you figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Types of Context Clues
- Definition: The word is explained directly.
- Synonym/Antonym: Similar or opposite words give hints.
- Example: The sentence gives a related situation.
Why Use Them?
They help you become a more independent reader and break down tough vocabulary, both in school and in real life.
Real-World Uses
You’ll use context clues to understand new words in books, directions, emails, and even text messages!
Examples
Figuring out that 'arid' means dry in 'The arid desert had little water.'
Learning 'elated' means happy in 'She felt elated, or joyful, after winning.'
