SSAT Elementary Level Quantitative
A foundational course that builds essential math skills for the SSAT Elementary Level.
Basic Concepts
Addition and Subtraction
Adding and Subtracting
Addition is putting numbers together, and subtraction is taking them apart. These two skills are the building blocks for all math!
Addition Facts
Addition means combining two or more numbers to find their total. You can use objects, draw pictures, or use your fingers to add.
Subtraction Facts
Subtraction means taking some away to see what's left. It’s like eating 3 out of 5 pieces of candy and finding out how many you have left.
Strategies
- Count on or count back.
- Use number lines.
- Break larger numbers into smaller parts (like 10 + 7 = 17).
Real-World Connection
When you share snacks with friends or count how many stickers you have after giving some away, you’re adding and subtracting!
Examples
12 + 8 = 20
15 - 6 = 9
In a Nutshell
Adding brings numbers together, while subtracting finds what’s left after taking some away.
