Edgar

Certified Tutor

Currently enrolled in Los Angeles Community College, I am able to always be practicing my study skills whether it is by myself or with a Varsity Tutor client. I am working towards transferring and eventually receiving my Bachelors in Spanish and Environmental Science.

I have been tutoring elementary and middle school students in various homework subject for five years now. Being only twenty myself, I find relating to the students very easily which in my opinion, is the greatest way to helping a student understand a lesson or an assignment. Besides tutoring, I have been lucky enough to design and teach my own curriculum for a summer high school course called "Spanish for Travelers."

Outside of academia, I enjoy reading, watching, playing and analyzing basketball. It is a sport, along with soccer, that has represented tranquility and family passion since I was a child. In addition, playing cultural music on my tenor saxophone has been a big part of my identity since fourth grade.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Patience and talking to students as a student myself. I have had much success getting through to students when I talk to them about how a particular hard assignment is just a roadblock for the ultimate goal - a college degree.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In my first session with the student, I would like to find out what things he/she finds interesting in and out of school. I let them ask me any questions, and I assure them that they can ask any question they have at anytime.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By helping the student identify keywords, regardless of the subject, I can help them become an independent learner. It's all about discipline and seeing the bigger picture that helps students become motivated.
