What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every person can learn and should be taught with differentiated instruction that caters to their learning style. Education is nourishment for the brain and opens up the door of opportunity!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself to the client and allow them to do the same. Next, I would find out what the client expects to learn from me, their history in school, and their learning style in order to develop a plan of action.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching them study skills, building up their confidence, and allowing them to independently work during sessions as they become comfortable.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Constant praise and encouragement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Review, reteach, and assess their progress. During the reteach, I would use methods that I didn't use initially.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I use decoding strategies. I teach students to connect what they've read to their prior knowledge, and to really analyze what they read.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Letting them give me input on the plan of action. Building trust and assuring them that their success is my top priority.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find technology to enhance the subject and/or relate the subject to a real life situation that appeals to the student.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Formative assessments to check for understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Focusing on what they know and are good at first and then tackling the areas of weakness. Positive praise to build them up.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Diagnostic assessments.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Determine their learning style and differentiate the instruction to meet their needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Lessons that cover subject materials, paper, pencil, a calculator, and an iPad.
