I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

There's no better feeling than helping someone. It has always brought me joy to see a student's face after they finally understand a concept they had been struggling with, or to see the joy they feel when they pass a test they were unsure of.
I believe I'm a great tutor because I love Math, it's fun solving a problem. I try my hardest to relate to a student to better understand them and their study needs as well as gain their respect. I don't just help someone with the current topic they're working on, if I detect that they need to better understand something that was previously taught, I will spend the extra time to help them understand that topic as well.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every person learns differently. You have to understand and get to know your student a little to find the best way that he or she learns. It will take some trial and error, but once you figure it out, the learning possibilities are endless!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

It depends. I always prefer to give a diagnostic test to get a feel for what they know and understand. Sometimes, I do need to go straight to what they are studying at the moment, and from doing that, I also learn where else they would need help.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

A student can stay motivated by setting goals for themselves, or by rewarding themselves if they received good grades.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to teach it to them in as many different ways as possible. Maybe they don't understand that particular skill or concept because they don't understand another skill or concept that you need to know to understand the current one. So, I may have to pause and go back to teaching them the concept from before to help them understand the current one.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Finding out what kind of learner that student is, are they a visual, auditory, or a kinesthetic learner? This helps a lot.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to relate the subject to a real life situation or explain how that subject could benefit them in the future.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Saying little things such as great job! I knew you could do it! Wow that's impressive.
