Tutoring is apart of my lifestyle. Currently I serve as a Math teacher for Spring High School in Spring, Texas. At Spring, I teach Algebra and Geometry, accompanied with before or after school tutoring in both subjects. What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe you must have a genuine love for what you teach to be a great teacher. I have a passion for math, and I want to inject into my students that same passion and enthusiasm. The best learning occurs when the student feels it has purpose. It is my goal to create a learning atmosphere that will be relevant and applicable to a student's lifestyle. I am not only a teacher, I am a mentor. My knowledge and experiences from being in college, the NAVY, and corporate America, will allow my students to grow exponentially as a well-rounded student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first session of tutorials would be a "get to know you" session followed by a game of Kahoot. I like to make my sessions personal so that the subject matter can be catered as a relation to their daily lives. Kahoot is an interactive game that can be used to assess any background content matter. Assessing content matter is important for me to truly understand where assistance and/or clarity is needed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to become an independent learner is to be motivated, to have great time management, and to be disciplined. I will become the student's accountability partner to make sure they are motivated by being a reminder of the importance of their education. I can assist with setting up convenient scheduling of personal study time and consistently doing periodic checks to make sure the plans that they create are effective.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keeping students motivated requires them truly understanding the purpose and the goals of having a great education. I will find out their goals and desires, and use that to fuel the motivation by sharing real-life scenarios that can ultimately take place in their personal lives.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Difficult skills are usually overcome by consistently engaging the concept many different ways. I find that students are fascinated with technology platforms that encourage learning. I can show students online platforms that are fun yet thought provoking and can inspire them to be proficient, if not master, any skill.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Taking a few minutes out of each day to read short passages about things that are of personal interest, and then explaining to me the content, will help with comprehension. I find that reading comprehension is about the interest of the passage to the reader. When it becomes time to read and comprehend something that a student may not be interested in, I then have to explain the purpose. Understanding the purpose of reading inclines the reader to search for the meaning.
