If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, try to teach the concept a different way. (in math using real life resources) Secondly, assess and/or re teach any previous skills that need reinforcing. Finally, move on and return to the concept another time so the student doesn't become frustrated.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First, always find texts that interest them and they can relate to. Then take the reading back a level so they become very confident with an easier level, and then move forward in small steps, using lots of encouragement and praise.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

"Breaking the ice" activities so the student feels comfortable and is able to work to their full ability. I always show how encouraging I am through looking through their past work and talking about some of the positive content.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would bring the subject to life by using real artifacts, and engage the student by posing questions that are mysterious and that they have to think about to answer. We would not necessarily stay at a desk!
