What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all children have potential and they need someone to bring it out. Learning comes in all shapes and sizes. Children do not all learn the same way so we have to reach all of them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce myself and tell the student a little about me. I would also ask them questions to get a better understanding of what they need help. I would also give them an assessment to see where they are.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I will give them skills that can used in math and reading.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would give the students encouragement and praise when they do good or get something correct.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to find another to teach the skill or concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First of all, I would assess their fluency. If they are struggling with fluency, then they are not going to comprehend. If fluency is not the problem, then I would have students read short passages and ask questions about the passage.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found positive reinforcement and using manipulatives with students keeps them engaged. Also you need to find out what the students like, so that you can incorporate it into the learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

While teaching the lesson, ask students questions about the material and have them explain what they did. At the end of the lesson, have the students explain everything that they did. After a while working with the student, an assessment can be given to see if the student understood the concept.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

You would need to give them a diagnostic assessment to see what they know and what they need to learn.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends upon the subject. In math, I would bring manipulatives to help students learn the concepts. In reading, I would bring materials that are on that student’s level so that they can be successful and then gradually give them challenging materials to read.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would find out what they are interested in and use it in the lessons. Also giving praise and encouragement will get the students excited about the subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would give them praise and encouragement. I would also let them know that it is ok to make mistakes and we just have to learn from them.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It would depend on how they learn best. Then I would incorporate it into the lessons.
