Elisa

Certified Tutor

I started tutoring fellow students when I was in high school. When I got to Duke, I had the opportunity to tutor at a local middle school. I have tutored a variety of subjects, but my favorite subject to tutor is math because of how much I enjoy it. I think that a tutor's enjoyment for a subject can directly impact how the student feels about it. If I can help a student become less frustrated with a subjects concepts, learn how to stay organized and keep up with their work, I know I have done my job well. I personally love to learn and even after having graduated, I am constantly looking for opportunities to learn new things. Additionally, in my spare time I enjoy reading, board games, and rock climbing. I am excited to work as a tutor once again in order to give students a chance to learn one-on-one to get a deeper and more clear understanding of their study material. By having the ability to clear up confusion with material every week via a tutor, the student will find it easier in the future to build on these concepts and to keep up with work as it gets more challenging.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teach at the pace of the student, and use a method of teaching that maximizes the student's ability to learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to discuss what the student wants to get out of the sessions with me. In the first session with a student, I want to understand the best way that the student learns and how to explain concepts in a manner that makes sense for them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to become an independent learner is by learning how to become organized and how to find answers to questions on your own without having to ask someone else, which I can help the student with by providing them with outside resources as well as teaching them the fundamentals, which gives the student some background to try and figure out more difficult problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Practice practice practice. I find that the best way to become more comfortable with a subject is to practice the fundamentals, and when you see yourself improve with practice, you will become motivated to continue working hard to reach your goals.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I am very patient. I will continue to explain concepts in different ways to the student until I find a method that works best for them. I find that linking the new skill to a skill that they already know and find second nature can be a good way to understand the new skill.
