Many students have difficulty with physics at first because it introduces new methods of thinking, so I love trying to help students reach that "click" moment where everything comes together. The actual calculations of physics problems may be daunting, but I aim to strengthen fundamental concepts during my tutoring sessions so that students feel confident to tackle difficult problems on AP and other standardized tests. Outside of my academic pursuits, I love music production, sound design, and song writing.

Lexy
BA Boston College
1+ Years Tutoring

I am an English major and potential Secondary Education minor at Boston College. I hope to concentrate on creative writing, so naturally it is my favorite subject to tutor. In assisting students with writing at Boston Latin, I have found that some students have a natural turn for writing essays and need little more than encouragement and editing. With most students, however, writing is not a skill they can effortlessly pick up, and creativity is not instantly fluid. Bearing that in mind, I use a Socratic method to draw out ideas and key words and phrases when helping students come up with responses to creative writing essay questions, i.e., the kind given on SATs, ACTs and on college essays. Usually, by the end of the session, they find out that they need a lot less help than they thought! I have also done a fair amount of math and science tutoring with middle and high school students, which is almost easier, since full comprehension can be immediately and clearly demonstrated. I generally design some sort of worksheet in order to walk the student through the process of figuring out the general concept in a unique way; for example, I will use an angle maze to teach geometric angle theorems. I am a proponent of the mindset that learning to learn is much more important than learning pure information, so I always focus more on the process than the outcome. I love to teach, and I hope to work in a high school some day!

As someone who has used tutoring myself in some of my harder classes in college, I understand that not everything comes easily to everyone, so I want all of my students to feel comfortable asking any and all questions they might have, or going over a topic as many times as needed to understand it. I am at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Currently, I am a Political Science major and a Data Science minor. Before working with Varsity Tutors, I have worked as a volunteer math tutor virtually for around 3 years at Peer2Peer and have since had a strong passion for helping students learn and enjoy the subjects they encounter. I have also assisted with SAT prep during the summer prior to my senior year as a part of a fundraiser for an pre-health organization I was a part of. Being a part of someone's learning process and helping them achieve their goals is one of the most rewarding experiences I took part in. The feeling when a particular concept clicks with a student is incomparable to anything else. It's a hard earned testament to the work of the student, and I want to help in the achievement of that goal. I am a tutor who values compassionate practice- making sure the student feels comfortable around me and helping them gain the confidence to approach harder topics. The thing that I stress the most is that everyone, regardless of skill level, makes mistakes, and that isn't a bad thing. Mistakes help us grow instead of stagnate. I hope to help every student I teach remember that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varsity Tutors matches Hickory students with expert LSAT tutors for 1-on-1 instruction. We pair each student with a tutor based on their specific needs, learning style, and goals.

Whether you need homework help, exam prep, or want to get ahead, our LSAT tutors are ready to help.

Common challenges include gaps from earlier material, difficulty with specific concepts, and trouble applying learning to new problems. These issues can snowball quickly in LSAT.

A tutor identifies where you're stuck, fills in gaps, and provides targeted practice. The 1-on-1 format means you get help exactly where you need it.

Tutors work with your student's actual coursework—homework assignments, class notes, and upcoming tests. This keeps tutoring directly relevant to what's happening in the classroom.

When you share information about your student's school and curriculum, we can match you with a tutor who has relevant experience.

All tutors complete background checks, credential verification, and teaching evaluation. Many of our LSAT tutors hold advanced degrees or have years of teaching experience.

You can review tutor profiles to find someone with the right background for your student's level and needs.

Many students see improved grades within a few weeks, along with better understanding of LSAT concepts and more confidence tackling challenging material.

Tutors track progress and adjust their approach to ensure continued improvement.

Most students benefit from 1-2 sessions per week. More frequent sessions help if your student is significantly behind or has an important exam coming up.

Your tutor can recommend a schedule based on your student's specific situation and goals.

Tutoring is purchased in packages of hours, with rates varying by tutor experience. Varsity Tutors offers several options to fit different budgets and needs.

You can discuss pricing during your consultation to find what works best.

Your tutor will assess where your student is, discuss goals, and start working on priority areas. Most students bring current homework or upcoming test material to focus on.

By the end, you'll have a clear sense of how the tutor can help and a plan for moving forward.
