- I sought to engage students by relating classroom material to the students’ own interests in music, culture, and world affairs.
About Me
I recently graduated with a PhD from Columbia University, where I taught undergraduates in music, anthropology, cultural studies, and writing. With a certificate in innovate pedagogy from the Teagle Institute, moreover, I bring new media tools into my pedagogic approach, helping students explore material from a variety of angles. Such interactive approaches complement and expand upon more traditional activities, helping students learn to become reflexive about their own thought processes and academic output. My own experience with AP English and Spanish, GRE, TOEFEL and TESOL test preparation and test design makes a strong test prep teacher. I have taught ESL, English reading and composition, Portuguese, anthropology, cultural studies, and music to a variety of learners in a variety of countries. In South Korea, I taught composition and analytical skills to high-achieving middle and high school students, working with both large and small classes and tutoring a high school junior one-on-one. In both Santiago and New York City, I taught English to small groups of adults with proficiencies ranging from advanced to absolute beginner. I have also privately tutored adults in Portuguese in New York. All of these experiences have heightened my sensibilities to different learner needs, particularly with regards to language learning, and I enjoy finding creative ways to convey information to students with different learning styles.
