Quite simply my passion is literature: I hold two degrees in creative writing (a B.F.A. and an M.A.) and write poetry, fiction, critical essays, and creative non-fiction. It was there that I discovered another of my passions: helping students who are eager to learn. My profoundly meaningful experience as a tutor led me to join Varsity after graduation. I believe in the importance of writing correctly, expressively, and effectively. Being able to express oneself precisely is vital for students of all disciplines, and indeed for all people who are involved in the difficult process of navigating human relationships. Achieving this precision, however, easier said than done. As a tutor, I am committed to helping students express themselves with as much creativity and uninhibitedness as possible while also staying true to the constraints of the English language. I believe that I am able to do this by employing the conversational method of pedagogy: asking questions, prodding students to push themselves creatively and intellectually, and attending to the details of their written work. By submitting ourselves to this process, we not only improve the quality of the essay, we improve as writers, thinkers, and communicators.
