About Me
While instructing my students, I realized they didn't have foundational skills in math, reading, and writing. It was too hard for them, and I felt demoralized that I could not help them. To make a real difference, I began teaching elementary school students. My focus was always on targeted instruction on skill development. I emphasized small group/differentiated instruction where students received almost individualized instruction. I was most interested in English Language Arts because if a student cannot read, then they cannot do well in any other subject. Later, I became a literacy coach and eventually a reading specialist. During that time, I mentored teachers and provided classroom support, but I always worked with students in small groups or one one-on-one throughout my career which expanded for about twenty years. During this time, I worked mostly with elementary school students who were performing significantly below grade level in English Language Arts. I have taken extensive training in teaching reading including Orton Gillingham Associate level (completed practicum), Wilson Reading Overview, Lindamood Bell, and others.
