About Me
Joshua Gavagan is a 2019 graduate of Michigan State University's Actuarial Science program with a minor in Mathematics, a degree he earned with honors. In his college years, Josh worked as an undergraduate learning assistant (ULA) for the MSU Mathematics Department, leading recitation sections, grading coursework and exams, and providing tutoring services to students in the Mathematics Learning Center in subjects from College Algebra through Multivariate Calculus. In his senior year, he contributed to undergraduate research in the discipline of reinsurance, a paper that was published in the Scandinavian Actuarial Journal in 2022. Josh's professional background is in the actuarial profession within the property & casualty insurance industry. His work experience includes performing complex pricing, liability estimation, and competitive market analyses to inform strategic decision-makers, as well as product development and regulatory compliance efforts (namely, in the wake of the Michigan No-Fault Auto Insurance reform legislation of 2019). Josh tutors students in a variety of disciplines. While his strongest subjects are mathematics, probability & statistics, finance, economics, and computer programming, Josh also shares his knowledge of the humanities in the subjects of composition, history, literature, philosophy, and politics. Further, his professional experiences have provided him hands-on application of a variety of computational softwares, including Python, R, SAS, Tableau, and Microsoft Office Suite (incl. Josh's pedagogical philosophy is one which embraces the Socratic method. Whether his is working with one student or a room of thirty, and whether or not the focus is on a quantitative subject matter, Josh sees learners thrive most in an environment where on-topic discussion among ALL participants is encouraged. Outside of his capacities as an insurance professional and as a tutor, Josh is an avid reader, and enjoys learning to play music (piano and guitar), watching film, following the MSU football team, and spending time with his family and his feline friend.
