My Journey to Becoming a Pediatrician by Ashley - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
Spending spring break in Costa Rica, I found myself surrounded by a group of elementary school children, their small arms wrapped around me in gratitude. Their voices filled the air, stumbling over English words as they tried to say “thank you.” It was our last day at the school, a place we had spent the past week transforming. We had built a playground, provided much-needed school supplies, and taught them basic English phrases. Seeing their faces light up as they played on the new equipment was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. At that moment, I realized my passion for working with children went beyond volunteer work—it was something I wanted to dedicate my life to. That realization set me on the path toward becoming a pediatric doctor.
Ten years from now, I envision myself coming home from work to my family after a long but fulfilling day at the hospital. As a pediatrician, my days will be filled with treating children, comforting nervous parents, and ensuring that each patient I see gets the care they need to grow up healthy. This future isn’t just a dream—it’s a goal I am actively working toward, and my education is playing a vital role in getting me there.
To achieve this dream, I plan to pursue a degree in biochemistry on the pre-med track. By earning my Associate of Arts (AA) degree in high school, I will already be two years ahead in my college education. This will allow me to complete my bachelor’s degree in just two years, putting me on the fast track to medical school. Majoring in biochemistry will give me a strong foundation, preparing me for the coursework and challenges of medical school.
Beyond academics, my journey toward becoming a pediatrician has been shaped by my leadership experiences and hands-on involvement in helping others. Through my volunteer work, including my time in Costa Rica, I have learned that leadership isn’t just about taking charge; it’s about inspiring others and working together toward a common goal. Whether it was organizing a fundraiser for underprivileged schools or mentoring younger students, these experiences reinforced my passion for working with children and making a positive impact on their lives.
Additionally, my role as a swim instructor has given me valuable experience working with children of all ages. Teaching kids how to swim requires patience, communication, and the ability to provide reassurance—skills that are just as important in the medical field. Many of my students came in fear of the water, and it was my job to build their confidence, just as I will one day comfort and care for young patients in a medical setting.
The road to becoming a pediatrician is long, but I am prepared. After completing my undergraduate degree, I will enter medical school, where I will dedicate my time to learning everything I can about pediatric medicine. My education will allow me to become a skilled doctor, ready to make a real difference in children's lives.
Looking ahead, I know that my journey will not be easy, but every late-night study session, every exam, and every clinical experience will be worth it when I am able to help a child in need. My education is more than just a means to a degree; it is the foundation that will allow me to fulfill my purpose. Ten years from now, when I walk into my office, stethoscope in hand, I will know that every step I took—from that eye-opening trip to Costa Rica to the rigorous years of medical training—has led me to where I was always meant to be.
