Phonics Tutoring FAQ

For young students, phonics is a great foundation for literacy, reading, and writing; concerned parents can reach out to Varsity Tutors to connect with a phonics tutor who can work individually with students to help them get everything they can out of phonics tutoring sessions.

Phonics is one way a student learns to use words properly - they'll probably start learning these concepts as early as kindergarten. Written language can feel like codes to a youth who struggles, and some parents try to help lessen the stress by starting the search for a "phonics tutor near me." We understand how important it is for your student to learn things like the different relationships between letters and words. Finding a phonics tutor with help from Varsity Tutors gives your student more opportunities to practice and learn.

In first and second grades, you can bet your student is learning the sounds of the letters, parts of words (like the endings), and letter combinations. By second grade, a student is using the phonics skills they learned early on (letter recognition, pairing, etc.) to spell and read basic words. Phonics tutoring and instruction is typically most useful to students between the ages of 4 and 7 because, after second grade, they're expected to know how to read and use words, to put sounds together, and to sound them out if words are unfamiliar.

Working one-on-one with a phonics tutor at an early age can help a student to comprehend more information and see that learning doesn't have to be something to be embarrassed about. Your student won't have to watch others as they learn and feel down on themselves it if they struggle. Working with a tutor at an early age might help your student gain confidence that they can use to speak up and read in class. Learning phonics skills early on can build a strong foundation for their academics later on too. That's why we want you to stop searching for "phonics tutoring near me" and let us help.

There are many topics in phonics that a child is exposed to at an early age. Qualified phonics tutors learn (by getting to know a student) how to help students to more easily comprehend what letters sound like, or how they sound when they are combined. The list below explains some of the topics that a student might study as they work with a phonics tutor:

Topics in Phonics

  • Consonants and short vowel sounds
  • Consonant digraphs and blends
  • Long vowel/final e
  • Long vowel digraphs
  • Other vowel patterns
  • Syllable patterns
  • Affixes

When Should I Look For Phonics Tutors Near Me?

Because students learn about phonics from an early age and they may be taught those concepts differently at each grade level, it can't hurt to seek phonics tutoring for students as early as first or second grade and continue that tutoring as needed throughout their academic careers. Phonics is taught at early levels, often before students even enter Kindergarten - you might even be teaching your student the basics of phonics when you teach them their letters or try to help them associate words and letters by pointing out different items and telling them what those items are.

There are a variety of approaches that teachers can use when it comes to teaching phonics. Synthetic phonics is one approach, which teaches reading by blending and uses segmenting to teach students about writing. Analytical phonics teaches consonant blends as units and teaches students to break down words into common components.

At the kindergarten level, a phonics tutor can help students to grasp the concepts required by Common Core Reading Standards. Some of those include basic things that adults don't even think about - reading from left to right, spaces between words, the pronunciation of segment syllables in spoken words, and being able to pick out the phonemes of a three-phoneme word. Students are also expected to know the different sounds that vowels make, to read common sight words, and how to substitute or add phonemes to a word to create a new one. If you feel your kindergarten student is struggling with their phonics understanding, one-on-one work with a phonics tutor can make a huge difference.

The table below explains the elements of the Kindergarten-Level Common Core Reading requirements:

Common Core Reading Standards for Kindergarten Students

  • Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.
    • Words go left to right on a page, from top to bottom, and from page to page
    • Spoken words have equivalent print versions signified by a sequence of letters
    • Spaces exist between written words
    • Knowing the letter of the alphabet in upper- and lowercase
  • Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
    • Ability to understand rhyming and bring up words that rhyme
    • Count, pronounce, blend, and segment syllables in spoken words
    • Blend and segment onsets and rimes of single-syllable spoken words
    • Ability to pick out the phonemes in a three phoneme word
    • Ability to substitute or add phonemes to a one-syllable word to make another word
  • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
    • Ability to make the primary or many of the frequent sounds of each consonant letter
    • Knowledge of the long and short sounds for each vowel, ability to associate with graphemes
    • Ability to read common sight words
    • Differentiate similar words by the sounds of differing letters
  • Fluency
    • Understand and read emergent-reader texts

Phonics Tutoring and Preparation for Evaluation and Standardized Tests

Throughout a student's education, they'll be evaluated on their literacy levels with a variety of exams, sometimes starting as early as Kindergarten, although those may not feel like traditional tests. Phonics tutoring in early grades can look like computer games or flashcards. It doesn't have to be practice tests and pop quizzes or lectures. Phonics tutors assess your child's level of understanding and use that knowledge to make sure their phonics tutoring practices are appropriate for both the student's age and comprehension. Since every student learns differently, tutoring sessions are unique to each student. That personalization makes things easier and more enjoyable for the student, and can help them to realize that studying and learning doesn't have to be all about struggle. Many of these tests and evaluations are designed to be fun, using both visual representations and words themselves to illustrate relationships between the combinations of letters and the image of what that word actually is - like a picture of a cat along with the word "CAT," for example.

There are a variety of assessments that a student might encounter to judge their literacy levels, but the general skills that any of these tests will cover remain consistent. Regardless, a phonics tutor can review the exam in question to identify what it will be assessing and how it does so. With this information in mind, a tutor can work with your child to prepare them and build up their understanding of any topics they can expect to face. A tutor can also walk students through practice exercises that are similar to those that the student would see on the exam, including coming up with practice on the fly or with practice problems provided by the test officials.

A Phonics Tutor Can Help Students Prepare For:

  • Grade Level Assessment Tests - These exams assess a student's abilities against others at their grade level. A tutor can begin measuring a student's abilities before the exam and build up their skills by focusing on the areas they need to improve before the day of the test.
  • Entrance Exams - Some independent schools may evaluate students to see if they would fit in well at their school. A tutor can help students focus on the skills these exams assess as well.

How Can A Phonics Tutor Help My Student Find the Benefits of Phonics?

Working with a phonics tutor means that study sessions can be fun. Phonics tutoring sessions don't have to feel like a fight for student or parent. Your student can get help with class work, prepare for exams, or learn more about words and reading. With a strong understanding of phonics and phonetic concepts, a student may have an easier time reading and communicating with others. Students learn the rules of language and how to apply them and learn to spell more quickly with phonics tutoring. Learning phonics simplifies things and makes reading and writing easier because it breaks down the English language into less than 50 distinct sounds. Familiarity with those sounds helps a student to segment or blend words together as they read.

As a parent, you've probably told your student to sound a word out if they're struggling instead of reading it for them, right? Phonics helps them to be able to sound a new word out and may give your child a bit more confidence that they can do something without always asking you for help. That's a significant development and can help students later - whether they're participating in phonics tutoring or they're working on an entirely different subject later in their academic careers.

Some of the benefits of learning phonics are outlined below:

Benefits of Learning Phonics

  • Student learn pattern recognition to develop reading fluency more quickly
  • Using the principles of phonics makes it easier to figure out new words by sounding them out
  • Students learn the pervasive rules of syllable structure
  • 50% of English words are fully readable via phonics, and 37% are mostly readable via phonics. Only 13% of words require memorization.
  • Phonics education in England increased the percentage of 1st year students reaching the reading standard from 58% in 2012 to 81% in 2016

The student read through some first grade sight words; she knew 16 out of 40. We read a story; when she got to a word she did not know she would omit it or wait until I told her what it was. We are focusing on blends and diphthongs so we played a matching game where I had her match the blend with the rest of the word. I saw slight improvement from last session on her knowing how to pronounce the blends.

I met the student today and began our tutoring session with some quick assessments to determine our starting points. She is eager to work and learn! I determined that she needs some practice with short vowel sounds. We worked through some blend ladders (sa, se, si, so, su, etc.) and will continue to practice these until the recall is automatic. We also went over her sight word list from school and played games with some of the words she struggled with. She read a decodable book to me with good accuracy and we did a good deal of 'word work' with the words from the book. We will focus on consonant-short vowel blends and sight word games for the next several sessions.

The student and I read some books to familiarize him with the alphabet. We played a game to work on his letter recognition. We then worked on writing his name. He came up with a great idea, and in my future sessions with him, we will be working through a book that he is very interested in.

We went over the sounds of a few vowel digraphs (au, ew, oo), different sounds of y, read some CVC and CVVC nonsense words, hard/soft g and c, and syllables. The student knows the rules for reading CVC and CVVC words and would sound each part out correctly, but sometimes would change from long vowel to short vowel when blending them. We worked on blending the ending sound first and then adding the first sound to that.

Student 1 - I am going to work on blends and digraphs with her. Today we began the "Ch" and "Sh" digraphs. She was very good at identifying the sounds. Student 2 - He tries to read the sentences very fast. When prompted, he can sound the words out. We began the "EE" and "EA" vowel teams.

If you think the young student in your life may be falling behind their peers, Varsity Tutors can set you up with a knowledgeable phonics tutor in as little as 24 hours. For many parents, phonics can be a difficult thing to try to teach to their children. Worse, some phonics problems stress general rules at the expense of accuracy, like pronouncing the "k" at the beginning of the word "knit" because your student hasn't been introduced to silent letters yet.

What all of that means is that you may not be able to help your student if they need help with their phonics studies. Thankfully, we can connect you to one of many certified phonics tutors who not only understands the basics of phonics but also knows how to effectively share that information with a young child. Read on for more information about how we might be able to help you.

What topics can my student study with the help of phonics tutors?

Phonics is actually a pretty involved subject covering a variety of topics, including consonants and short vowel sounds, consonant digraphs and blends, vowel patterns, syllable patterns, and affixes. Here is a quick refresher on what each of these concepts are:

1. Consonants and Short Vowel Sounds

This is the most basic concept in phonics. Consonants are speech sounds produced with a total or partial closing of the vocal tract, such as the letters "t," "d," and "f" in the English alphabet. They are contrasted by vowels such as "a" and "e" that do not require speakers to close their vocal tract to produce their corresponding sounds. These sounds are called "phonemes."

2. Consonant Digraphs and Blends

You're almost certainly familiar with digraphs, though you might not call them that. A digraph may be defined as a combination of letters that produces a sound that isn't signified by any letter in a language's alphabet. For example, the "sh" at the beginning of words like "shark" and "ship" is a unique sound that no individual letter produces. Some digraphs are also "leftover" from an earlier point in a language's history when there were distinct pronunciations that no longer exist. For example, the digraph "ph" produces an "f" sound in words like phone, but it would be incorrect to spell it "fone."

3. Long Vowels

Long vowels are longer than their shorter counterparts, though they are denoted by the same letters in English. The concept is typically taught as a vowel saying its own name, such as the "a" in "may" or the "i" in "mine."

4. Syllable Patterns

Syllables are the phonological building blocks of language, and phonics instruction generally involves identifying and counting them. A vowel sound usually serves as the "nucleus" or core of a syllable, with optional consonant sounds on its beginning or end.

5. Affixes

An affix is the addition of particular letters to a base word that changes its meaning in a predictable manner. For example, adding an "s" to most nouns in English makes it plural. Both prefixes and suffixes may be considered affixes.

What are the benefits of working with phonics tutors?

Your student's classroom teacher is likely to teach phonics from kindergarten to second grade, but the volume of children in the class prevent any one student from getting the kind of individualized attention that may be necessary for it to sink in. Furthermore, younger children may be too nervous to ask for help in front of their friends even if they realize they need it. This can prove problematic, as students are expected to be able to read and write basic words by the conclusion of second grade.

Working with a professional phonics tutor can help solve both of these problems above. Your student can work with a knowledgeable phonics expert in a one-on-one learning environment where they don't need to worry about anyone making fun of them because they are learning a little more slowly than everyone else. In fact, your child may establish a personal rapport with their instructor that makes it easier for them to ask for help as necessary.

Any questions your student asks can also be answered quickly, ensuring that they receive clarification before a minor misunderstanding gains momentum. Furthermore, their completed assignments can be returned with feedback expediently, allowing them to correct any mistakes while the material remains fresh in their mind.

Studying with a private phonics tutor also allows your student to study at their preferred pace. If they already understand how to read and phonics bores them to tears, their instructor can aggressively introduce new concepts to make their study sessions more engaging. If they're having a hard time distinguishing between short and long vowel sounds, their instructor can slow down and provide additional examples until they are ready to move onto the next thing.

Phonics tutoring sessions can also be designed around your student's preferred learning style to optimize their study efficiency. If your son or daughter is a visual learner, their instructor can incorporate charts, tables, and other visual aids to help them understand what sounds each letter can make. If they are more of a kinesthetic student, they might play with magnetic letters to develop a better understanding of the concepts taught in phonics. If your student is more auditory by nature, their instructor might utilize a lecture and discussion format with plenty of oral repetition to help key concepts stick in their head.

Since young children rarely want to sit down and study the way older students might, your student's instructor may also use games to make studying phonics more fun. There are a lot of educational video games that can help a student understand the principles of phonics, and your child's instructor can recommend a good one. Alternatively, they might invent a game using something as simple as flashcards to make studying more engaging.

Your child's tutor can also help you find resources to help you effectively reinforce the instruction your student receives in school and during phonics tutoring sessions. You can also receive regular progress reports to help you understand where your student is progressing and any areas of opportunity that could benefit from a little more work.

Why should my student study phonics?

As many as 87 percent of all English words can be successfully sounded out to some degree with phonics, allowing students to sound out a lot of potentially unfamiliar words. Working with phonics can also help young students identify linguistic patterns, potentially allowing them to achieve fluency more quickly. An approach called "synthetic phonics" also introduces students to writing through segmentation. Phonics may also help young children with spelling, though there are a lot of exceptions since many English sounds can be spelled in more than one way.

Perhaps most importantly, phonics is part of the English Common Core standards that students take standardized tests on throughout their academic lives. If your student is apprehensive about taking a test, their instructor can shoe them test-taking strategies for them to fall back on if they feel stuck. They may also demonstrate mindfulness techniques such as meditation if they are experiencing test anxiety.

What makes Varsity Tutors such a powerful educational resource?

If you were going to try and find your own private instructor for your student, you would need to make sure that they understand phonics, a subject that most adults haven't thought about in years. You would also need to make sure that they know how to work with young children, as working with a four-year old bears little similarity to helping a teenager prepare for something like the SAT. Finally, you would need to make sure your schedules are compatible. As a busy parent, do you really have time for all of that?

Probably not, which is why we specialize in taking the hassle out of private instruction. We maintain a database of thousands of independent tutors, helping us find you somebody who meets all of your phonics tutoring needs quickly and efficiently. We also offer an exclusive Live Learning Platform that allows your child to receive face-to-face instruction online, so you don't need to worry about cleaning up the house because the instructor is coming over or driving your student anywhere. Powerful features such as video chat functionality and a virtual whiteboard ensure that your student's study sessions are just as effective as meeting up in person would be, so you're not compromising efficacy for convenience either.

You are also in complete control over when study sessions take place, allowing your young student to continue pursuing any extracurricular activities they enjoy while also working on their phonics skills. For instance, there never needs to be a session on a Sunday if you prefer to devote the day to family time.
