Instability by Astrid - March 2025 Scholarship Essay
One day, I am drinking a Jarrito at my house, riding on a train, or taking my dream vacation to Italy. While I am uncertain which will come first, one thing I am certain of is that I will have used my life experience, both personal and academic, to free others of their financial instability.
¿Y de qué vas a vivir? “And what are you going to live off?” my father asked when I told him I wanted to be an artist. At the time, I was nine, and painting was my passion. I have outgrown that career, but the words still lingered. In search of my passion, I considered being a chef, pianist, actor, and detective. Ironically, I eventually chose accounting after taking a few courses, realizing that becoming an accountant did not just situate me in an office; it extended to forensics. I could still play the role of a detective without analyzing violent crimes, helping individuals avoid the manipulative tactics of others, and being their guide to everlasting stability.
I have witnessed my family’s financial struggle and because of it, I understood when not to ask for things. If I did, I only reminded them of what they could not afford, and as a result, it has shaped me into the person I am today and the emphasis I place on how crucial money management in life is. As my father says, “Knowledge is power.” The saying holds truth: the more I discover things, the more I understand the value of knowledge and the endless opportunities they offer. If you wish to progress, you must be willing to learn and use every resource at your disposal. Take this scholarship, for example; it did not just stumble my way- I searched for it. Why? It’s simple: I want the opportunity to attend college while being financially secure. I argue that knowledge is not the only form of power; motivation is equally powerful, and I am full of both.
Groundbreaking inventions are never accomplished without help from others; humans rely on each other to thrive. As I begin the next chapter of my life, my education will help me unlock my full potential in accounting. It will provide me with valuable experiences from my educators and the technical skills required to adapt to the technological advancements in the industry. I intend to surround myself with individuals who will challenge me and enhance my understanding of accounting, carving my path to helping others reach their financial independence.
Life itself is unstable. There is no telling what will happen tomorrow, next week, or the years after. Yet, I am driven to secure others with financial stability in their lives. Whether it starts small, I know the difference it can make for individuals who struggle with it. I can now answer my father’s question: Vivo para dar a los demás. I live to give to others.
