The Future of Education by Crystal - September 2025 Scholarship Essay
As a current senior in high school, I have spent almost twelve years in public education. During this time, I have seen some of the good things about our education system. For example, at my high school, there are tutors that come from different universities to help students with their schoolwork. This is beneficial to the students because it allows them to have personalized instruction. However, I hope to see many changes in education over the next 10 years that will motivate students to be more engaged in school. Specifically, these changes are having less technology in classrooms, smaller classroom sizes, and more classes that are career- oriented.
Technology has been introduced more and more each day in all classrooms. Even though technology has made it easier for teachers to lecture, it’s also been making it harder for students to comprehend the material well in class. In an article titled “Technology in the classroom: Benefits and the Impact on Education,” it mentions how technology can easily become a distraction and decrease the amount of socialization students do in class. It’s very important for students to socialize with each other and learn how to interact with each other. In another article called, “ Positive and Negative Impact of Technology on Education” it states, “Automated assessments, online courses, and pre-programmed learning modules may inadvertently diminish the role of educators in fostering meaningful connections with students”. This highlights how the use of technology in classrooms not only affects students' relationships with each other, but also with their teachers. It’s critical for students to not only be taught through a screen, but by actually engaging in lessons and hands- on activities. Due to these negative effects of technology, I predict that technology will be reduced in classrooms in the future.
Along with technology, I believe that smaller classroom sizes help students be seen and heard more consistently. In an article named, “Small Classes, Big Possibilities” it states, “Teachers in small classes can devote more time to individualized attention, engage in more time-on-task instruction and identify precisely and early those student learning problems that can be remediated before a student falls too far behind”. This demonstrates how a smaller classroom can actually benefit a child’s learning in school. Since there are fewer students, teachers have the opportunity to bond more with their students and make sure they’re following along well with the class. In another article called, “ Class Size” it mentions, “..reducing class size, particularly for younger children, has a positive effect on student achievement overall and an especially significant impact on the education of disadvantaged children”. This shows how having smaller classes in elementary schools benefits a child’s overall performance. As time goes on, I think these smaller classroom sizes will increase as we will start to see the negative effects of the current larger classroom sizes.
Finally, career- oriented classes can help students feel secure and hopeful for their future. In high school, there are many students who struggle with decisions about their future or feel pressured to make a decision quickly, but career-oriented classes could be what they need. In an article named, “ Why More Schools are Embracing Career Technical Education” it states, “Studies show that a lack of hands-on career exploration in high school is a critical gap, leaving many students unsure about their future paths and more likely to require significant adjustments to their educational trajectories post high school”. This reveals how students are guaranteed more success after high school if they are offered more technical classes. High school is a time period for teenagers to experiment what they want to do in life, but they can’t if there aren’t enough opportunities being offered. Later in this article, it mentions, “Students beginning to identify their interests and career goals early on is crucial for making informed decisions in their educational journeys”. It’s important for students to have all kinds of possibilities in high school, so they can figure out what they want to do after. Having less technical classes can cause students to feel unprepared for college which is why I think that more technical and career-oriented classes will be offered.
Schools are seen as boring or unnecessary to some students because they might not be getting enough teacher guidance, they feel like there are too many distractions, or sometimes feel like school isn’t helping with their future. Students should feel like school is helping them in their life and not be making it more complicated. I know not everyone enjoys school, but it would help them if there were some changes. They can be big or small, but a change is a change and I know children want to succeed, but they need teachers and parents to help them. It’s time for a change in education, and I hope that teachers along with parents do what is best for their kids.
