Media: The Education that Keeps Giving by Elijah - November 2024 Scholarship Essay

My education thus far has prepared me for future success because of the various pathways that it has illuminated for me. With a degree in Multimedia Production, you can do a lot of things within today's society. These items can range from working within a TV station to freelancing on my own.
The skills that are taught to us within the specialized courses to progress our degree are skills that are used throughout the business. Allowing us to get hands-on experience right away within the fields that we want. Part of the education I've experienced this semester alone is getting the opportunity to produce live sports broadcasts both in class and for the local TV production crew. This opportunity is invaluable because I am able to explore jobs within sports broadcasting and am learning the skills of how to handle a camera, graphic board, replay machine, shader, and other production equipment.
In addition to on-air production, I’ve learned how to utilize the equipment and software that professionals use within their daily lives. This has equipped me with the skills to do post-production on video and audio to a professional level quality.
These few qualities are just within the technical major-specific courses that I have taken so far. I’ve also begun to learn how to effectively communicate with any regarding a multitude of topics with my intercultural communication course. This has given me the skills to respectfully discuss amongst varying cultures within our society.
Although my goals within the field of media have shifted through the three semesters that I’ve been at my college. I plan to continue the journey through my degree trying to focus on one aspect that I want to go into. Whether that be audio production or TV broadcasting I will strive to consume as much knowledge as I can in those fields. Within the campus, there is a multitude of opportunities outside of registered classes where you can learn about the different fields with hands-on experience and education. One such example is the student-run news broadcast that runs every day for 15 minutes. This allows students to understand what a news broadcast looks like without the pressure of doing it for the rest of their lives. I hope to participate in broadcast to help hone in on what I may want to do in my future career within media.
But the journey to continue education doesn’t just stop with participating in more outside class activities. I will continue to widen my knowledge across the board with more classes focusing in on the legal and communication side of production. As well as how to write compellingly from the various courses required within my English minor. All of these opportunities will help further my education on how to be a better communicator and an effective media producer within society.
