Phenomenal Tutors by Felicia - January 2025 Scholarship Essay
Mentors and tutors have a significant role in the educational development of students. They help students in areas of need and steer them in the right direction. This person shares their knowledge so that others can be successful. My mentor/ tutor is Mr. Bob Miller. For over 10 years, I have worked with Mr. Bob in developing and nurturing my math skills. We have worked together from 2nd grade math through AP Calculus AB. He is incredibly reliable and passionate about assisting students and he has had a significant impact on my life.
As a young elementary school student, Mr. Bob allowed me to use the whiteboard. While this may seem like a meniscal activity, the whiteboard was reserved for older students only. This made me feel special and held me to a higher standard. By entrusting me with the responsibility of using the whiteboard, it pushed me to continue to excel academically, and to have a greater desire to be successful. I was able to write out equations and demonstrate my understanding through showing my work in front of my peers. This trust served as a form of encouragement and inspired me to continue to move forward with challenging math courses.
Mr. Bob has always been impressed with me and he always makes sure that I leave our sessions with a good understanding of the lesson. His confidence in me allowed me to have confidence in myself and has significantly contributed to my success as an honors student.
Under Mr. Bob’s guidance, I have taken advanced Mathematics and Science courses. I have always had a genuine love and interest in academics. Prior to entering high school, I earned high school credits in Biology and Geometry. Once I entered high school, I excelled in Honors Algebra 2, Honors Advanced Pre-Calculus, Honors Geometry/ Trigonometry, AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, Honors Chemistry, AP Biology, Zoology, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology. Additionally, I was inducted into the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (National High School & Two-Year College Mathematics Honor Society), National Science Honor Society, Saint Andre’ Award in Honors Anatomy & Physiology I, Outstanding Achievement Award in Zoology, Outstanding Achievement Award in Health, among other awards.
While I am the recipient of these awards, Mr. Bob is the true MVP! He has been there every step of the way to coach me through. He has been a phenomenal educator, and I appreciate all that he has taught me over the years.
