Essay-demns program, goals and motivation by Gabriela - April 2024 Scholarship Essay

Personal Essay
I immigrated to the United States from a small village of 3,000 people in Poland in 2015,
facing the challenges of starting from scratch while pregnant and being unfamiliar with the
language, away from home and my beloved family. It was not easy time for me. Thankfully,
when my son was 9 months I soon started to see the light, deciding to attend community
college and experiencing immense personal growth. Giving birth to two children heightened my
understanding of the priceless nature of human health. Deep inside, I developed a great
interest in nursing career, observing, and admiring the work of nurses around me. Over several
years, my passion for medicine, particularly emphasizing patient well-being, has flourished. I
believe a nursing career aligns perfectly with this framework. As a dedicated volunteer at the
Red Cross, I assist individuals in understanding procedures and prepare patients for blood
donation, finding immense reward in providing selfless help.
Graduating from the Chicago School of Phlebotomy with a Phlebotomy Technician diploma
further solidified my foundation in healthcare. Envisioning myself as a nurse on the patient-
oriented pathway, I've dedicated years to preparing for this journey, preparing myself in taking
prerequisite courses. However, I need to admit that I faced some doubts and hard times during
challenging periods related to homesickness, my husband's job loss, bankruptcy, and a high-
risk second pregnancy. Despite temporary setbacks reflected in my transcripts, including
courses withdrawals, I persevered through personal losses during the pandemic (my father-in-
law and grandfather passed away), maintaining a belief in brighter days ahead. Keeping my
mind in further education in nursing, I consciously chose psychology as my major, and at the
same time participated in science preparatory courses, because I believed that it would be an
ideal basis for a nursing career. Now, with unwavering motivation, determination, maturity,
bilingual proficiency, excellent time management, hard work, and my family support, I am
confident in my ability to enter my dream program, manage an accelerated rigorous curriculum
and successfully complete it. My aspirations include connecting my future with providing
medical assistance and embracing the broad concept of patient education. I see this field not
only as one with potential for development but also as offering enormous opportunities to help
others. I am convinced that my passion and unconventional, holistic approach to healthcare
will contribute to developing my clinical skills and advancing my education to further stages.
I believe that a good nurse should embrace both personal and professional responsibility and
accountability for her practice, ensuring her work complies with ethical standards. The nurse
should prioritize the patients well-being and provide them with a guarantee of safety and
dignity. I emphasize and believe that the moral foundation of nurses should be respect for other
people and responsibility towards other. Moreover, I believe that it's crucial for a nurse to be
aware of professional responsibility and to expand her professional qualifications. This is the
kind of nurse I would like to become. I deeply believe that my candidacy can contribute to an
excellent patient care, as this is crucial element in today's developing world of medicine.
