How Technology in Education Allowed Make to Thrive Academically by Jack - November 2025 Scholarship Essay
Bill Gates once said that, “Technology is unlocking the innate compassion we have for our fellow human beings”. My experience as a student has taught me that no one learns alone. We all have at least one truly impactful person who has made our educational journey possible. For many, this has included parents, teachers, counselors, and friends. However, for me, the person who has made such an impact on me is an online tutor who helped me with math. I have always struggled with math and found learning it very difficult. I often found myself frustrated trying to solve problems that I just could not see the answer for, even if my classmates were able to do it quickly and easily. However, once I met Bella, an online math tutor offered through my school, I started to see myself thriving in math, something I never thought would be possible. This represents how technology can connect people who would not be able to meet without it. In our zoom meetings, Bella worked patiently to help explain and break down difficult concepts, walk me through solving sample problems, and empower me to actually find a love in math. None of this would have been possible without her and speaks volumes about the power of technology to make a meaningful difference in one’s educational journey.
Once I started regularly meeting with Bella, I saw my grade in math improve significantly, with me starting to be able to complete assignments and study for tests on my own. I know that I am not alone in this experience. Technology has allowed for billions of people to share and connect over the internet. For students, it allows for instant help in solving problems, brainstorming, and getting ideas. It also emboldens connection among people who may not even find each other without access to technology. Educational leaders should take note of this. While one must always be responsible in using technology, the benefits of including it are boundless, allowing for students to not just pass their classes, but learn to love and enjoy the materials they are studying.
In conclusion, my experience in learning from Bella demonstrates how technology can make such a positive difference in one’s educational achievement. Technology services that students utilize, such as online tutors, represent an opportunity to learn, grow, and master the content they are studying. I am so thankful to Bella and all the other people in education who are using technology to impact the lives of others. In reflecting on the quote from Bill Gates, technology in education allows for us to demonstrate compassion for others by giving them the tools that embolden their academic success.
