Building a better future by Jamiya - September 2025 Scholarship Essay

Education is supposed to be the key that unlocks opportunity, but sometimes it feels like the lock is broken. Schools do a good job of teaching academic subjects, but they often leave out the lessons that really prepare students for life. Over the next ten years, I hope education becomes more practical, supportive and personal for every student.
The first change I’d like to see is making financial literacy a required subject. Too many students graduate without knowing how to budget, pay taxes or understand credit. These are things every adult has to face, yet they are barely covered in school. If we learned about money management before graduation, we could avoid mistakes that lead to debt and financial stress.
I also believe schools need to put more focus on mental health. Stress, pressure and personal struggles affect students more than grades ever show. Having access to counseling, mindfulness programs or even just safe spaces to talk would help students handle challenges in a healthier way. When mental health is supported, students do better in class and in life.
Technology is another area where I hope education improves. It can make learning more engaging and accessible, but it should be used carefully. Students need guidance on using the internet responsibly, protecting their privacy and balancing screen time.
Finally, I want education to feel more personal and student centered. Everyone learns differently. Some students shine with hands-on projects while others do better with discussions or independent work. Schools should give students more chances to learn in ways that fit their strengths.
In ten years, I imagine a school system that does more than prepare students for tests. It will prepare them for life by teaching them how to manage money, care for their well-being, use technology wisely and follow their passions. Education should not just shape good students. It should shape confident people ready for the real world.
