How Technology Enhanced My Classroom Experience by Kamryn - November 2025 Scholarship Essay

As technology advances, parents and teachers raise their eyebrows, anxious about what these advances mean for the future of education. If technology is used in a classroom improperly, it can have long-lasting negative impacts on a student’s abilities. But in my experience, technology has positively impacted my classroom experience by helping me learn more efficiently, learn more, and grow in skills that help me outside of the classroom.
To set the scene, my schooling journey began when I was three years old. We didn’t have much technology in the house, so when I was bored and lonely, my favorite hobby was listening in to my mom teach my home-schooled sister. Before I knew it, I knew almost everything she knew and by the time I finished third grade, my mom let me jump to where my sister was in sixth grade. This made homeschooling efficient, even without technology, because my mom devoted all of her time to teaching both of us the same things. However, once my little brother was old enough to start classes, my mom’s time and attention had to be divided which made school tricky. And this was when technology became a valuable asset in my schooling experience.
Technology allowed my sister and I to continue our education through online classes so my mom could be more hands-on with my little brother. Technology positively impacted my classroom experience by helping me learn things more efficiently. I didn’t have to wait for my mom to finish teaching my brother, and I didn’t have to wait or slow down my sister if I had a question. With technology, I was able to continue learning at my own pace.
This in-turn positively impacted my classroom experience by allowing me to learn more. With the internet, I had a wealth of knowledge at my fingertips, and I didn’t need to search through books and encyclopedias to find the exact section of the thing I was interested in learning. I could look it up online. Because technology allowed me to learn more efficiently, I was able to spend time learning more than I ever could have before. As I got older and finished required subjects, I was able to spend time learning about areas I was really interested in: writing and film. I was able to join online workshops, and even an internship with an award-winning author to practice writing and marketing skills. None of these things would have been possible without technology.
But technology is only as valuable as the person controlling it. Technology was valuable to me because through trial and error it taught me skills I could apply outside of the classroom. Because not only did I have a wealth of knowledge at my fingertips–I also had a deep pool of distractions. In order to use technology for good, I had to learn how to discipline myself, a skill I can apply to many areas outside of the classroom. I had to be careful about not taking breaks to scroll, or not getting sucked into personal rabbit-holes of searching. I failed many times, but with parental guidance and continued practice, I was able to develop better habits of discipline over time.
Technology is just as scary as it is promising. But if used with care and discipline, its potential for positive impact is unmatched. I would not be where I am today without the tools that modern technology provides. So even though it takes discipline and care to make sure it is used well, I believe technology is a valuable asset to include in the average classroom for its ability to help students learn faster, learn more, and obtain valuable skills they can apply to all walks of life.
