Beyond the Classroom by Meico - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

From my college experience, I have realized just how vital and valuable a college degree can be. Being in school has completely changed my perspective as someone who didn't have hopes and dreams of going to college. When I started at Alabama A&M University, I was unsure what I wanted for my future, but college gave me a clear sense of direction. For example, as a business major, I have been exposed to many opportunities, such as internships and courses, that have shaped my interest in human resources. I am now pursuing my MBA in Human Resources. In college, I discovered my passion. One of the most significant personal benefits I have experienced is connecting with people who inspire me. Through my involvement with Boss Kidz, I've been able to work on real-world projects that help promote career readiness for young students, which has taught me a lot about leadership and collaboration. I was able to experience opportunities by being in college, helping to build skills that go far beyond the classroom. Another significant experience was when I served as a liaison for Georgia Tech MBA students. This was a one-time opportunity, but it gave me insight into what it takes to succeed in a graduate program and how to manage relationships with professionals at a higher level. That experience reinforced my desire to continue my education after earning my undergraduate degree.
College has also pushed me to grow on a personal level. Before attending, I was more reserved and hesitant to take on leadership roles. However, I've gained the confidence to speak up and share my ideas through group projects and class presentations. For example, when I first joined Boss Kidz, I needed to figure out how to contribute. Still, over time, I found myself leading social media initiatives and even working on podcast episodes that didn't need editing. These opportunities have made me realize my potential and the value I can bring to a team. In addition to professional and academic growth, college has been a time for self-discovery. I've learned to balance my academic work, extracurricular activities, and personal life. It's taught me time management, discipline, and prioritizing what's most important. Making the Dean's List was one of the proudest moments of my college experience because it showed me that hard work pays off, even when juggling many responsibilities.
In short, a college degree is more than just a stepping stone to anyone's career. It's been a journey of figuring out who I am, what I want to do, and how to make a difference. College has opened doors for me that I never would have considered before, and it's shaped how I approach challenges and opportunities.
