The Learning Methhod That Has Had the Greatest Impact on My Academic Success by nyara - September 2026 Scholarship Essay
For a long time,I believed that being successful in school meant spending as much time as possible studying.I would reread my notes, highlight important information, and look over assignments until I felt prepared. However,I eventually realized that recognizing information is not the same as truly understanding it. The study strategy that has had the greatest impact on my Academic Success is active recall, especially when I combine it with teaching the material to someone else.
Active recall requires me to close my notes and challenge myself to remember what I have learned.Instead of repeatedly reading the same information,I create questions and answers. If I get something wrong, I review that topic and try again. This strategy has helped me identify what I actually know instead of assuming I understand something simply because it looks familiar.
Another part of this method that has helped me tremendously is explaining information out loud. When I teach a concept to someone else,I have to understand it well enough to explain it in my own words. If I cannot explain something clearly, I know that I need to go back and review it.This has been especially useful when preparing for difficult tests because it helps me find my weaknesses before test day.
Active recall has also changed the way I manage time. Rather than waiting until the night before a test, I try to review information in smaller sections over several days. This makes studying less overwhelming and allows me to remember information for a longer period of time.I have learned that studying effectively is more important than simply studying for hours.
Most importantly, this strategy has changed my mindset about difficult subjects. When I struggle with something,I no longer immediately think that I am bad at it. Instead,I understand that struggling can be part of the learning process.I can review the information, practice it again, and find a different way to understand it.This has made me more patient, determined, and confident in my abilities as a student.
Ultimately, active recall has taught me that Academic Success is not about memorizing the most information or studying the longest. It is about understanding what I learn and being able to apply it independently. This strategy has helped me become more organized, confident, and responsible student. As I finish high school and prepare for college, I know that the skills I have developed through active recall will continue to help me face new challenges and reach my academic goals.
