I am a current student at the Colorado School of Mines, studying to double major in Applied Mathematics and Engineering Physics. I have been tutoring students professionally for one year, but also through my schools for 5 years now. I tutor most kinds of Math and Science, and love doing so; being able to help spread understanding of a difficult concept never fails to bring me joy. As a current student, I understand how lecturing is often not the most effective (or interesting) way to learn, so I like to be very interactive and ask a lot of questions in my teaching, almost like a conversation between the student and myself.

While I attended Drake University, I worked in the Drake Math Lab for 4 years, and I worked with a variety of students, classes, and majors. I graduated with a degree in Actuarial Science in May 2014 and soon after attained my Master's Degree in Secondary Math Education from Iowa State University. I am currently pursuing my PhD in Literature/Creative Writing at the University of Denver. Prior to beginning my doctoral studies, I was a creative writing/English lecturer at Washington University in St. Louis where I completed my MFA and senior post-graduate teaching fellowship. I received my BA in Philosophy from Carleton College in 2009. Before my time in St. Louis and Denver, I taught English Literature at the Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut and, earlier, at Germantown High School in Philadelphia. During my time at Loomis and Germantown, I taught English Lit I/III, Contemporary Literature, 10th grade grammar and expository writing seminars, Literature of the Sea, Experimental Novel, and Creative Writing. At Wash U, I taught Fiction Writing I, II, and Microfiction, and last year I facilitated pedagogy training for Wash U MFA graduate students. I currently tutor at DU's Writing Center and, beginning this fall, I will teach undergraduate fiction classes. I have a marked interest in modern and contemporary fiction, though I very much look forward to helping students with all craft/literature/essay writing/verbal test taking endeavors.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition. I received my Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Cornell University. While I tutor various subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring math and feel that our school systems often fail students when it comes to math. I do not believe that some people simply "can't do math." I believe that some may need extra time and help, but everyone can do math. With patience and hard work, any student can learn. I am a native Mandarin speaker, and I got both MD and PhD degree from one of the top 20 universities in China. I've also passed the "national proficiency test of mandarin" when I was in college. Teaching and researching the difference between Chinese and English have always been my passion. Before "varsity tutors", I have tutored five English-speaking students from ages 6 to 20. I tailor my classes to different students' needs, and I enjoy writing my own "Chinese grammar and practice" book based on different levels. I am a super responsible and hard-working person. I am a junior mechanical engineering student at Oklahoma Christian University. I have tutored middle school, high school, college, and post college age groups, primarily in math based subjects. I am a neuroscience and psychology double major from CU Boulder working to go to PA school down the road. I am originally from the East coast, but definitely prefer the hiking here. I am an incoming first year medical student at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Aurora, Colorado. I graduated from the University of Virginia with a BS in Biomedical Engineering. I am quite passionate about education, since I feel it is the key to any sort of satisfying life. As the saying goes, knowledge is power, and knowledge can give you comfort and help guide you through a world that is often frustrating, convoluted, and dissatisfying. I have channeled this passion into teaching astronomy, which I majored in. I also taught some history and religion topics as head of a secular club in college.

I am a student at the Georgia Institute of Technology studying Chemical Engineering. For the past several years, I have worked with students extensively. Through hosting events for younger kids to learn about STEM and for older teens to practice empathetic design, I know the importance of teaching students in ways that engage them rather than frustrate them, which I apply to my teaching. I am a graduate of Arizona State University. I received my two Bachelors of Science degrees in Biological Sciences (Animal Physiology and Behavior) and Political Sciences with a certificate in Civic Education. Since graduating, I have started working with the Denver Math Fellows helping close the opportunity gap for high need students by providing small group math instruction. I find the most excitement in tutoring middle school math and science, Algebra I, and General Biology. I find that for most students what makes any subject hard is being unable to use what you already know and not knowing how to tackle the subject. I want to help students by giving them multiple access points and allowing them to access whatever content they desire at their current level. I believe the most important way to help students learn in is to relate content to their current interests and future goals. In my spare time, I enjoy reading non-fiction about technology and neurobiology, hiking, watching sports (mainly football and basketball) and listening to jazz and classical music.

I am also interested in helping students with their writing, both for science and non-science classes. Writing is a delicate process, but one that can be learned with the right help. It is my hope that I can encourage students to write creatively but with a strong grammatical and structural base. I tutor in English and college essay writing and will help with essay editing. My overall tutoring style is one that is fun but serious. While students learn in many different ways, I think being comfortable with their tutor or teacher is the most important aspect of learning. I want the student to feel free to ask as many questions as they need or want without feeling they are failing. Some topics take longer to master, and that is okay! Outside of tutoring, I enjoy hiking, playing disc golf, crafting, and playing some N64.

I am so excited to start tutoring with Varsity Tutors! Previously, I have experience tutoring students in English and math at a high school tutoring center. I am comfortable assisting students of any grade level with English or writing. From brainstorming to editing, I have lots of tips and tricks to help students improve the writing and grammar. In arithmetic, I decided to offer tutoring services for only Algebra I, middle school, and elementary math because I feel I am better suited to explain these concepts; however, my math skills are proficient up to the Calculus II level. During high school, I volunteered for 2 years with a youth development program at an elementary and middle school in my community. I am currently an undergraduate studying Computer Science at the University of Kansas, and am also a member of the KU Honors Program.
