I am a licensed physician from Florida who is currently changing careers. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2009 and have extensive tutoring and editing experience. While a student, I became a certified writing tutor through the Critical Writing Department. Since I completed my writing requirement at the University prior to matriculating, I was the first freshman tutor to be accepted into this selective program. The tutoring program involved a preliminary peer-tutor training course prior to beginning tutoring, in order to certify that I had the appropriate background to provide professional feedback to fellow students on their literary works and projects. I first started tutoring when I was 10; I'd explain new words in books to my little sister and help her with cursive, work on times tables with my older brother, and teach the little bit of English I knew to my immigrant parents. I tutored students in my middle school through a counseling program, helped deaf and disabled students develop social and creative skills, and freelance tutored throughout high school, and have tutored Spanish-speaking immigrant families (ages 6-12) in Durham, NC since October 2018. Other teaching experiences include training my dog to go down a slide on command and teaching my 10th-grade precalculus teacher how to hand whistle. I write grants to NASA to use spacecraft data to study the composition and evolution of rocky planetary bodies (Moon, Mercury, asteroids). I am a graduate of SUNY University at Albany. I received my Bachelor of Science in Economics and Japanese with a minor in History in 2010. Since then (and even before as a sub) I have predominantly been teaching in the New York City public education system. I had worked as a substitute teaching assistant since 2008, moving between dozens of NYC public schools before finally settling in late 2011 at M.S. 216 George J. Ryan--an incredibly diverse middle school in Queens. I am an Environmental Biology major and Writing minor. Using my two interests, I find it easiest to help students learn complicated topics by being able to explain them simply and in your own words. I am Ankit Jajoo. I am enrolled in Duke University Class of 2022 studying neuroscience and computer science. STEM is my number one passion, while history is my number one interest. Humanities and STEM not only coexist, but work together often in life. While STEM provides the foundation for the future, humanities contributes to how it is used to advance humanity as a whole. I love biology, chemistry, and computers. It is so cool to see how all these tiny minute parts of the world interact to create you, me, and everything we touch. On the other hand, history is cool to see how societies interacted to create the present world. The past is never separate from us, but always influencing everything from the various countries to cities to the tiny villages all over the world. The world is a combination of all of this and it is my passion to understand the world. Other than just about education and information, I love teaching other people about stuff. I enjoy teaching all my friends some stuff, in return they teach me other stuff. Contrary to popular opinion, teaching is a two way street. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Chicago, working towards a pre-med double major in Psychology and Biology (with a specialization in Neuroscience). Beginning in my early teens, I began working and volunteering as a tutor in a variety of environments: I began as a volunteer at a summer program for underprivileged children at the Learning and Tutoring Center of East Austin, and since I have worked as a private elementary school tutor, a private SAT-prep tutor, and a preschool tutor for the Neighborhood Schools Program in South Side Chicago. I have taken, and succeeded in, a broad range of Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) classes, and am familiar with the latest formats, question varieties, and scoring guidelines of these standardized tests, along with the SAT. My teaching philosophy is to go beyond "teaching to the test". Although test-taking skills are crucial for any assessment, I believe the most valuable thing a tutor can do is to enhance and help develop conceptual understanding in our clients. I believe that once a student understands something at the conceptual level, he or she will be much better prepared for the topic, not only in the specific test we are preparing for, but anywhere else it may come up. Memorizing words or equations might help somebody in the short term, but understanding why that word means what it means, or what an equation is actually depicting is worth the extra effort. Besides test-prep I think I can be a great help in writing and editing, as I have experience in everything from short, timed essays such as the SAT essay, to college essays, to research papers such as the IB Extended Essay. I am fully fluent in Spanish for anyone who wishes to communicate in or practice the language.

I received my BA in mathematics and economics from Vanderbilt University. Upon graduating, I was employed as a high school math teacher for four years in the states of Tennessee and Florida, while also tutoring in STEM and test prep for a Nashville-based company. I am currently an adjunct professor of economics at Fordham University in Manhattan. My degrees are from Rice University (PhD) and Yale University (BA) The PhD is in economics, and that was my major as an undergraduate. I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I received my Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology with a focus in Cultural Anthropology and Minor in History. Prior to attending UCLA, I received an Associate of Arts in Communications Studies from Skyline College in San Bruno, California. In June 2018, after graduation from UCLA, I moved to Miami, Florida where I volunteered with the Americorps VISTA program, serving as the PeaceJam Coordinator at Miami Dade College. After my year of service, I stayed in Miami where I became a Middle School Language Arts teacher with Miami Dade County Public Schools. While I am an English teacher, and tutor a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about History, Sociology, and of course Cultural Anthropology. However, I love teaching Language Arts as I believe literacy and teaching students to express themselves through written communication is imperative to success in the competitive academic and professional context they are entering.
