Series 3 Tutoring FAQ
If you want to buy or sell commodities futures in the United States, you need to pass the Series 3 (National Commodities Futures Exam). This test is designed by the National Futures Association (NFA) and administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) to assess whether a candidate has the knowledge of futures markets and pertinent regulations necessary to work as a trading professional. If you are having a hard time preparing for the test, Varsity Tutors can help you find an expert Series 3 tutor who can assist you.
The Series 3 is divided into two parts, each of which must be passed individually in order to pass the overall test. Part 1 consists of 85 multiple-choice questions on a broad array of futures-related topics, including Futures Trading Theory, Option Premiums, Types of Orders, Hedging Futures, and Speculating. It can feel overwhelming, but your Series 3 tutor can work with you on every topic until you are ready to move on to the next one. You are also encouraged to ask any questions you have if you fail to understand something, allowing you to seek clarification before you feel hopelessly lost.
Part 2 consists of 35 multiple-choice questions that cover the rules and regulations traders are expected to follow, including the NFA's regulations as well as those associated with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). No matter how well you do on Part 1, any grade below a 70 on this section will cause you to fail the entire exam. The questions aren't especially challenging, but there is a lot of rote memorization involved. Your Series 3 tutor can help you come up with a mnemonic device to help you remember everything.
You only have two and a half hours to complete both parts of the Series 3, so time management is another important component of your test prep. Your Series 3 tutor can provide practice exams to give you a realistic sense of how long you have, helping you budget your time accordingly. Learning how questions are worded in advance can also help you feel more confident on exam day.
