I graduated from Rice University in Houston, Texas in 2010 with a degree in psychology and worked at a reading institute. My psychology education helped me understand why the reading institute was so effective and why many students struggle in other areas as well - they misuse their working memory! Our brains work by combining small bits of information at a time and the process can easily be derailed by anxiety, missing previous information, poor study habits, or a psychological condition.
I've worked with students with each of these problems (and more) and seen the vast majority improve their performance, which gives them confidence, which improves their performance even more. It's incredibly rewarding to be a positive example for students and watching their confidence grow until they forget what it was they were so worried about in the first place!
