I have been tutoring students in math, reading, and writing since high school, and I've found that teaching and learning happens on both ends. Just as the activity of teaching is not limited to the teacher, the activity of learning is not limited to the student. There is always an exchange between what the teacher and student have to offer.
I believe it is best to show, rather than tell students how to work their way through the task at hand, whether it be a problem or a prompt. I know that there is not always one way to solve a problem or answer a prompt, so I am always open and patient with students as we walk through that process.
