I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Daniel

Certified Tutor

I hold a Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where I studied the molecular pathogenesis of Alexander disease pursuant to a grant from the NIH. I also hold a B.A. in Biological Sciences from the University of Mississippi where I conducted environmental research for an EPA project. Currently, I am pursuing a J.D. as a part-time law student at Catholic University where my legal interests consist of intellectual property/patent law and public policy.

In the past, I have provided tutoring in both commercial and private contexts to individuals ranging from middle school students to adults applying to medical and pharmacy school. I specialize in providing content that is oriented towards students who are interested in careers in medicine, biomedical research, and biotechnology. The subjects I cover are chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. I am particularly fond of biochemistry, and I enjoy teaching organic chemistry reactions that are related to processes of medical importance.

The foundational principle of my teaching philosophy is customization, and I work hard to tailor my sessions to the specific needs of the student. I strongly believe students learn best by having material presented to them from different angles and in different formats.

In my free time I enjoy reading, fishing, and watching college football. I have also recently ventured into the Maker movement, but so far I’m not skilled enough to make much of interest! When asked, I still perform mass spectrometry-based proteomics experiments for collaborators in academia.
