I received my B.S. in Mechanical Engineering this May at Pensacola Christian College. All through grade school and college I was able to help and tutor peers in math related classes. My all-time favorite subject would be algebra, although any sort of math excites me! I've learned to be very patient when helping others and love seeing students have that "light bulb moment" when the concept finally makes sense to them.

Growing up on a farm in Wisconsin, I developed a great love and appreciation for the outdoors. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time on the water, playing the piano and cello and playing tennis with my husband.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach study/organization skills, as well as how to use their resources to find answers quickly.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By keeping the subject interesting and explaining to the student all of the exciting ways that the subject can be applied to the real world.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Break it down to the basics, and then slowly build to the concept, approaching it from different angles.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would get to know the student, what they are struggling with, and what their goals are for that particular subject. Then, I would start working with them to help them understand the material.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I like to ask the student to show me how to solve the problem, and I occasionally will ask them trick questions to see if they are really thinking about the answer.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I work through the problem with the student until he/she understands it. Sometimes it takes a few different ways of explaining. Then we will work through a few other problems dealing with the same concept, so the student really feels that he/she knows it very well.
