Rebecca

Certified Tutor

I am originally from Brooklyn, New York and am currently working towards a master's degree in Nutrition from Columbia University. Prior to graduate studies, I received my bachelor's from Cornell University in the biological sciences. Outside of my academic life I enjoy cooking, dancing, horseback riding, and traveling. I have always made myself available as a tutor to my peers, but my formal tutoring experience began in my freshman year of college when I offered chemistry tutoring. Throughout my college career I have offered assistance with general biology, general chemistry, biochemistry, and microbiology. As a former student in the busy NYC public school system, I am aware that many students do not succeed fully solely given the limited learning styles used widely in schools. As a tutor I am honored to supplement schoolwork with individualized attention to meet your learning needs and help you succeed!

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that the only tools necessary to succeed are effort and individualized attention! With your efforts and my work to personalize your learning- we will succeed!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I generally take time to learn about their preferred methods of learning and their areas of weakness. That way we can work together to address these knowledge gaps in a way that is effective!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By teaching study techniques, rather than just offering information, my students will learn to personalize their own learning experiences moving forward.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help my students stay motivated by making learning manageable in order to offer more opportunities for success and, therefore, more opportunities to be confident!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Every concept and skill is important in learning, as learning is a process requiring building blocks. If a student is having trouble at any point, I work to create multiple learning tools that will target varied learning approaches and needs.
