I hold a Bachelors of Science in Biology and have worked as a tutor for over four years and have tutored students ranging from Elementary to College. I have tutored in many areas from Algebra to Reading Comprehension. My degree helps in my tutoring abilities as it allows me to utilize all my skills in the areas of Math, Science and English all at once. I help students in classes by helping them to utilize their knowledge through practice problems which I create to help them increase their comprehension within areas such as math.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to help students learn by having them engage in problem solving directly and positive encouragement.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session with a student I would most likely run through the topics they need help in during the duration of our tutoring in order to create a plan of action to help the student in the best way possible. In addition to this, I would also jump write in and assess their understanding of the topic they are currently covering.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I believe by helping them solve problems and actively engaging them in the learning I can help them become independent learners.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
In order to keep a student motivated, I constantly give positive re-encouragement, whether it be giving an easy problem to show them they can handle it, or helping them step by step through problems and learning.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student is having difficulty in learning a skill or concept I go back to the prerequisite of said skill or concept, or break down the current skill needed to be learn thoroughly so they have a good understanding of it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
To help students with reading comprehension, I would slowly break down sentences and patiently help them understand to say/read certain words.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Strategies I have found successful are being positive with the student, giving problems to actively engage them in the learning, and assessing their comprehension during the session.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
To help them get excited in a subject I would either relate it to a real world application or show them how the subject can benefit them in real life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use quizzing and verbal questioning to make sure the student understands the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I give them easier problems to begin with and slowly build them up to the point they can independently solve any problem.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I assess their understanding based on the first tutoring session, the subjects they need to learn, and how far along they are in learning the subjects.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
With students who need more time to understand certain concepts, I break down concepts and stay patient until they learn the subject. Students who are going above and beyond, I help them by keeping the pace relatively fast and moving to new subjects as soon as they finish the old one.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
During a tutoring session I typically use materials such as calculators, notebooks, and pencils.
