Certified Tutor

Hello, my name is Kerem and I am a fourth year student at the University of Akron studying Biomedical Engineering. I have been a tutor at the University's library for 2 years and this is where I found my passion for teaching others. I love math and I love to see others slowly fall in love with it too. Even if I can't make you fall in love with math, I promise that I will give you a new found respect for it.

Hobbies

Some things I like to do outside of tutoring includes, reading, exercising, and playing guitar. I love to read because I look at it as an opportunity to view the world from another person's viewpoint. I always like to know how other people approach different situations and reading allows me exactly that. I love pushing my limits, which is why I enjoy to exercise. I like to lift weights as an exercise and I really enjoy seeing the tiny amount of improvement I make with each work out. To be honest I am not a great guitar player but I still enjoy messing around with it. I really like doing new things and with a guitar I can learn a new skill or a new song every time I pick it up, or practice older songs.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I like to ask them conceptual questions about the topic at hand to make them realize that most of the time they actually understand the material, but are just over complicating the process.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I like to ask them a simple question pertaining to the topic, then I add more steps to the question until it is very similar to the question they were having problems with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I tell them to treat reading as a conversation. I found that most of the time students get stressed about reading, but I tell them it is simply someone's way of talking to them. This helps my students relax a bit, which in turn helps them soak up more information.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

There are many different approaches I use, but the one I found most effective is when I treat my students as friends and help them on a more personal level. In this manner they are not so afraid to ask questions and joke around a bit.
