What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is simple. Primarily, listen carefully to the student's concerns and ask questions to clarify that I understand their needs/goals. To assist the student, I create a positive environment where mistakes are encouraged and thinking habits are challenged. Finally, I help the student to develop and practice strategies that help them teach themselves.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In general, I find it helpful to gain insight by asking questions regarding past academic successes/failures, the student's opinion of difficult concepts, and their overall goals for the session as well as longer term goals.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I ask them to employ their research and critical questioning skills.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Students can stay motivated with responsive feedback that is positive and allows them to problem solve successfully. In this way, the realization of their own skills is immediate.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Some strategies include having the students make real-life connections, asking various questions to elicit knowledge based replies.
