How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Encouraging and rewarding the student's independent research and verbalization of their thoughts will stimulate independence in the learning process.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Attempt a different approach in relaying the information, while keeping in mind the student's learning style.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Allow the student to verbalize what they have read in their own words.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The first thing is to listen to how they feel about the learning process, the subject matter, and the significance thereof.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Most likely, I would develop and tell a story of the use of this subject matter in everyday life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Allowing the student to tell me about their understanding of the material, either written or verbally.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Encouragement and accolades for even the slightest progress.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I listen for frustration, lack of understanding, and other concerns of the student.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Adjust, adjust, adjust. Maintain a style of flexibility in the tutoring process.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Flash cards and short storytelling by student and tutor. Pencil and paper, blocks, or any item that can assist in painting the picture we are attempting to convey.
