The teacher who walks in the shadow of the temple, among his followers, gives not of his wisdom but rather of his faith and his lovingness.

If he is indeed wise he does not bid you enter the house of his wisdom, but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind.

The astronomer may speak to you of his understanding of space, but he cannot give you his understanding.

The musician may sing to you of the rhythm which is in all space, but he cannot give you the ear which arrests the rhythm nor the voice that echoes it.

And he who is versed in the science of numbers can tell of the regions of weight and measure, but he cannot conduct you thither.

For the vision of one man lends not its wings to another man.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Great teachers serve their students. Not the other way around.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Typically, a first session entails getting to know the student and his/her needs, level of existing knowledge, and learning style. That means lots of Q&A!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning is basically reliant on motivation. I try to find out what motivates a student and what they're interested in. Interest is the great engine that powers learning.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

The big question of motivation is WHY. If someone is feeling unmotivated, it's usually because the WHY of what we're doing has become lost, changed, or was never there! When we remember why we're doing what we're doing, we can push ourselves to finish.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

It depends on the reason for the difficulty. Some concepts are inherently hard to grasp. For this, we approach them step-by-step. But often the problem is of mental resistance or de-motivation. For this, we must come to an agreement about why we are here and why we are doing this.
