Certified Tutor
The journey of teaching someone something new is very fulfilling. This could be a new language, skill, message, or idea. I have been personally tutoring for over 5 years now and one thing I have learned is that every student is different, but that one skill that you can apply to every individual is the skill of patience, caring, and being consistent with their progress. Creating a comfortable environment for them to learn in without feeling any pressure is critical to their success. I have taught people of all ages from elementary schoolers to retired adults. I truly do like to teach and it is a skill that I am glad I have.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Being patient, kind and consistent in making sure that the student is 100% confident in their answers and understanding of the subject at hand.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I ask them questions on what difficulties they are having with the subject and go over different learning strategies on how to overcome them. Then, I will assure them that they will be able to understand the material because one thing you have to make sure of is to make them feel confident in their learning ability; they will learn, and they will succeed.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
To help a student to become an independent learner is to install the notion of curiosity and to seek out truth and knowledge on subjects they are curious about. The main interest of their quest for knowledge has to come from within, but you have a higher chance of them becoming an independent learner if it is for subjects they are interested in.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Helping a student stay motivated is the same as helping anyone stay motivated; they have to see the goal at the end, and they have to see that their hard work will get them the goal they want to achieve.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
We focus on that particular skill that they are struggling in. Although, you have to focus on all skills, the skill that they are struggling in would definitely need extra attention in order to be in line with the others.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
You explain it to them as you were talking to them as a friend and context clues are essential. Tell them to picture it as a movie, and they are reading the script. They are the director, and they are in charge.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Repeat, repeat, repeat.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Real-life examples and practice are your best friends. Make it something that they can relate to, and it will make a world of difference.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Start off with simple examples and work your way to the more difficult ones; they might get it more or become more motivated if they are on a winning streak.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By asking them what they are needing help in. Only they know what they truly need.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
By understanding and leveling with them. One thing never changes: they want to see an engaged and caring tutor.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Old fashioned pencil, paper, and studying necessities.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
By explaining to them that it is a challenge, but once they conquer it, it is something else that they are good at.
