What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to help students understand math in a context related to students. This includes explaining things in terms the student understands as well as using multiple approaches.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask the student what are the areas the student is struggling with as well as areas they are succeeding in mathematics.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student become more independent by assisting the student on the process of solving a problem, then monitor the student completing independent practice, and lastly check the student's work when working by him or herself.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by seeing an end goal, such as a good grade or score, or tie in the context of problems with areas the student is interested in.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would review basic concepts first and see the student's previous knowledge of the topic. From there, I would add new concepts to gain the student's confidence on the subject matter.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would provide alternative terms, definitions, or examples to help students understand the content of the problem they are reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Strategies that are successful include building the student's confidence from basic problems to complex problems within a concept. I also like to provide students applications of where they can use the concept.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would get the student excited about math content because they would be able to see my excitement about the content area.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would use repetition of the concepts, make variations to problems, and ask unique questions to help the student understand the concepts.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would build the confidence of the student by working with the student on the basics, and making sure the student understands before moving onto the next concept.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate the student's needs by asking them what they recall from previous related topics, and determine from there what remediation/review the student needs.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt tutoring to whatever ways the student learns and is able to grasp the concept.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically use pencil and paper or an online whiteboard. I would require the student to bring the topics they need help on, and the session would move on from there.
