As someone who has always been an athlete I have always had an innately competitive personality. However, I believe the most important competition to cultivate is the competition with oneself.

As a former division 1 soccer player I always adopted the mindset of focusing on others and competing with other students in the classroom. However this approach proved unsuccessful for me academically during my initial undergraduate years.

Once I started focusing on myself I gained a better self awareness of my own learning abilities and weaknesses, and began to excel in my pre medical courses. Now I believe I can help other student gain more self awareness about themselves and their own academic capabilities by thoroughly evaluating their habits and working to address and correct their weaknesses.
