My goal is a math tutor is not only to empower students to excel in their coursework, but to also recognize the beauty of mathematics and how it works in the world.
I have a bachelors degree in math and psychology which makes it very easy to teach math as well as relate to students and a masters degree in math from the University of Pittsburgh.
I worked at the "help desk" where students would show up randomly with questions and problems. I was a teaching assistant at Pitt where I would teach a class of students where they would come twice a week to go over assigned homework problems. After I finished my degrees, I always tutored students in some way. I tutored for many years for the SATs where I would conduct two hour tutoring sessions in person and then most recently, I worked as an online math tutor.
I am able to tutor in most math subjects but my favorites have always been Geometry and Trig. When I actually took Geometry as a student myself many years ago, I couldn't understand it. So when I was faced with being a tutor, they told me that I had to tutor Geometry and I panicked. I got out a Geometry book and started to work through some of the problems and I realized how perfectly the problems would work out, like little puzzles. I really "got" it at that point. After that, this was my favorite subject to tutor because I was excited to show students what I had discovered.
My tutoring style is to lead students to the correct answer by asking questions.
Outside of math, I love to exercise outside by going on long runs and long bike rides. I also lift weights and hit our punching bag. Exercise help to keep me focused and get rid of negativity to keep my thoughts focused on positive productive things. I also work in a clothing store because I love fashion and putting outfits together.
My husband and I love to cook, eat, exercise outside and go on vacations to new places where we can explore, not like tourists but so that we can see how life really would be in new places.
I have a 22 year old daughter in graduate school and an 8 year old daughter in third grade. Both keep me young and I enjoy talking and doing things with them every day.
