Fascinating and Helpful: Why I Chose Psychology by Mia - April 2025 Scholarship Essay
“What about being a therapist?” my mom asked me one day on a car ride home. When I thought about it something clicked inside me. At the time I did not realize why but throughout the remaining two years at high school I came to realize it. The reason behind why I am majoring in psychology.
Ever since I was young psychology had fascinated me, but I did not feel that it was more than the average person’s interest in the subject. I never read any particular books that would distinguish my curiosity. As time went on after my mother suggested studying psychology, I paid careful attention to how those around me interacted with the world around them. I discovered that I feel deeply about people in general and would love to help them, not just those whom I considered close to me. I tended to ponder why others treated people the way they did or why one situation affected a person in a certain way. These questions were not limited to others but were also directed at my own self.
Additionally, I have had a couple occurrences that have expanded my knowledge of psychology to solidify my decision to pursue this field of study. One such occurrence was the opportunity to take psychology classes. This was made possible due to going to an early college which allowed me to take college classes. While taking these classes, I was engaged and wanted to know more about psychology. The other occurrence was family therapy. One of my family members was in crisis and family centered therapy was recommended. Throughout the process I was fascinated by how the therapist could come to such conclusions and how our family started to change. By seeing therapy in action, I could picture myself doing similarly.
All in all, picturing myself talking with a client and helping them through their mental distress brings me satisfaction. This alone is a good enough reason as to why I want to pursue psychology. However, I am someone who enjoys the pursuit of knowledge as well. Both of these facts complement each other and form the reasons why I want to major in psychology.
