I am proud to be a part of Varsity Tutors! I am originally from San Antonio, TX; I completed my undergraduate education at Rice University in Houston where I received a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Currently, I am in my second year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine.

I'm currently attending Rice University- pursuing a double major Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Economics. As you can probably tell I'm very passionate about math, and I'm even more passionate about teaching it! I prefer to teach math a little differently than some of you may used to. Many of students think of math as a plug and chug approach- simply being given formulas and plugging numbers in. While I will give you the formulas and critical things to remember if you insist on it, I prefer to teach mathematics as a form of problem solving. How math works is a beautiful thought process- understanding how a formula was conceived is much more rewarding than simply memorizing it. But in the end it's all up to you- the student. If you want a fast run-down of everything you need to know to ace the test- I'll happily help you. However, if you're willing to think outside of the box and learn some very neat stuff, I'll open the doors to mathematical problem solving for you!
I am a first year pure math PhD student at Boston College.
I am a graduate of New York University and received my Bachelor of Science in Finance. I also completed my premedical coursework at NYU and will be attending medical school in July 2015 as my next step to becoming a pediatrician. Ever since high school, I have tutored and worked with children of all ages and from all backgrounds. As a tutor at Mathnasium, I worked with elementary and middle school students to improve their math skills. In college, I worked for America Reads and served as a reading tutor for 3rd graders in a NYC public school. And after graduation, I spent my time before medical school teaching self-contained 4th grade in Houston ISD. While I tutor a wide range of age groups and content areas, I am most passionate about tutoring math, science, and college admission tests (SAT and ACT). As a public school teacher, I am also very familiar with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade STAAR strategies and content. I have had a lifelong passion for working with children, teaching, learning, and math/science. I truly enjoy building relationships with my students and watching them grow academically. Besides teaching children, some of my hobbies include: hiking, skiing, swimming, working with animals, and enjoying the great outdoors.
I am a student at Trinity University currently studying biochemistry. I have experience as a tutor my senior year at Clear Lake High School, when I worked as an instructor at Mathnasium. I also volunteered in a program helping students with SAT prep and college applications. My favorite subject to tutor is math, because the clear cut answers of mathematics make it easy for a student to see their progress and build their confidence, which for me is the best part of tutoring! My teaching style is very flexible, as everyone has different needs, but I usually use a lot of socratic questioning. Outside of academics, my interests include singing, soccer, and most recently, rock climbing!
I'm an undergraduate at Rice University, majoring in Physics and Biochemistry, with a strong passion for research, classical music, and good teaching. I've loved math and science from a young age and am eager to share my knowledge with other students. I believe that everyone deserves to enjoy learning about our world and that everyone has their own preferred way to learn. That's why I hope to offer personalized tutoring that helps you learn not just the material but also how to better teach yourself.
I am currently a rising Senior at Rice University from Alexandria, Virginia. I'm studying Political Science and Latin American Studies with a minor in Politics, Law and Social Thought. After I graduate I hope to go to law school to become an immigration lawyer.
I am able to tutor in a variety of subjects from middle school all the way up to introductory college courses. I especially enjoy helping students with math or English coursework. I can also help with a variety of standardized tests, from the SSAT to the MCAT. I am very interested in helping students overcome test anxiety by learning strategies that can help them stay calm and be efficient. In particular, I want to help students who struggle with timed essays - I myself had to learn ways to complete them successfully, and I hope I can pass on some of these skills.
I am a rising sophomore in Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. I am majoring in security studies thinking about working in counterterrorism. As far as tutoring style, I think it is really important not to give the student the answers but to ask them questions and help them come up with strategies to get to the answer for themselves; the goal is to make myself unnecessary in a way. My strengths (in school and tutoring) are in foreign languages including Latin and humanitiesexpect a very enthusiastic tutor especially if we are talking about Shakespeare! I also think it is important to try and frame things in a context students are used to, so if that means watching She's the Man in order to understand Twelfth Night, then that's what we will do (although we do have to read the actual play as well). If that sounds like something you could use, get in touch!
I am currently a student at the University of California at Berkeley. I have worked children of all ages, from kindergarten to high school. During my senior year in high school, I tutored fellow students in SAT and ACT prep, as well as various math and science courses. I enjoy teaching a variety of subjects, but my favorites are math and English. I enjoy getting to know each student and design my curriculums based on each student???s needs. In my spare time, I play the piano, violin, and guitar.
I am currently a senior at Rice University. I am majoring in Economics and Biochemistry & Cell Biology. Since I am still a college student, I have taken most subjects recently so the concepts are still fresh in my mind. I really enjoy working with students and will customize my method of teaching to best cater you. I have previously tutored with Kumon Learning Center and am eager to tutor you!
I'm an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York City, and from this you might think that Varsity has put my profile in the wrong city. They most certainly have not: I am a Houstonian, born and raised, and I'm back in my hometown for the summer. Last year in New York, I worked with Elementary schoolers, helping with preparation for New York State Math and English exams. This summer, I'm looking forward to helping with test-prep for all ages. With the help of some excellent teachers, I myself scored a perfect 2400 on the SAT, helping me get into Columbia, one of the most prestigious universities in the country. Since then, I've wanted to join that elite corps, to help other students conquer standardized testing, complete the college application process, and go further on the road to achieving their dreams. At Columbia, I study Computer Science, but I also have a great passion for the sciences, math, and literature. I enjoy Chemistry and Physics, am very comfortable in math from Pre-Algebra all the way through Calculus I, and have gathered some great insight about the sort of writing that is expected from America's top universities. I love learning of all sorts, and hope to be able to share some of that passion this summer! When I'm not preparing for classes, I enjoy reading the classics, learning new programming languages, and exploring the two wonderful cities I'm so privileged to split my time between.
I am able to tutor in most math, chemistry, and physics subjects at levels from middle school through college. I can also provide tutoring in some SAT and SAT 2 subject tests. My favorite subject to tutor is math. I have loved math for as long as I can remember. To me, solving a math problem is like solving any other problem in life - you combine the information you are given, assumptions you can make, and your expertise and prior knowledge to derive a conclusion. I appreciate being able to help students develop these types problem solving skills through math because of how applicable they are to non-math scenarios.
I am currently studying petroleum engineering at The University of Houston. Although I was typically a strong student in all areas throughout high school, there were some teaching styles I encountered that complicated the material more than was necessary. In fact, I avoided certain subjects for several years simply because of one unpleasant introductory class.
I'm Aurnab. I'm a Bioengineering student at Rice University. I've been tutoring since high school. Due to my wide background in a variety of subjects that I've studied, I have a very interdisciplinary approach to tutoring that can be tailored to any student to achieve results.
I am working towards becoming a certified teacher. During high school at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science, I maintained a 4.0 GPA, was on the Dean's List every semester, and earned recognition as a National Merit finalist. During undergraduate college at the University of Texas at Dallas, I maintained all A's, graduated as a Magna Cum Laude honors student, was on the President's List multiple semesters, and received the Academic Excellence Scholarship due to my National Merit finalist standing. During high school and undergraduate college, I studied diligently in order to learn and succeed academically, and I hope to be able to provide others with the same opportunity.
I am a current student at Rice University studying Mathematics and Computer Science. I have lots of tutoring experience, having tutored kids at my high school and at-risk youth. I know how intimidating asking for help can be, which is why I make a point of being patient and respectful with all of my students. I think it's important for students to understand that getting tutoring can be a stress-free and beneficial decision. I have always loved math, and I am able to tutor in pre-algebra, algebra, AP Calculus AB and BC, multivariable calculus, and high school physics. Outside of academics, I enjoy playing the guitar and rock climbing.
I am a third-year mechanical engineering student at Brown University,
I am a patient and dedicated tutor that wishes to help every student feel confident and ready to succeed.
I am down to earth and attentive to their needs. In my spare time, I run, do yoga, and travel!
I'm a recent Rice University graduate who grew up in Corpus Christi and Houston. I am tutoring a variety of subjects, and I first started tutoring in high school for middle and high school students in my school district. My favorite subject in high school was history, but in college I became interested in psychology and biology. Thus, I have a lot of academic interests and can help out in subjects ranging from the humanities to math and science! I have also had plenty of experience with standardized test taking, and I can help you figure out the best strategy to be confident on the test and succeed. I am easygoing and patient and will personalize my tutoring style so that I can help each student to the best of my ability. I believe in active, not passive learning, and will not give up on you! I will be attending medical school in the fall of 2012.
I am currently a 3rd-year Nutrition major at the University of Texas at Austin with a certificate in Pre-Health Professions. Upon graduating, I am planning on attending medical school to become a physician. Prior to college, I held a job as a primary school instructor at Kumon, where I tutored students aged 5-13 in fundamental mathematics and English. I believe that education is one of the most important proponents of a successful future career, and especially, the foundations of any educational work are imperative to understand and grasp. Growing up, I have had extensive tutoring myself in SAT and ACT, so I am able to bring multiple perspectives on topics other than elementary and middle school math and English. I believe that the student is only as good as the teacher teaches, so I perform my absolute best to be a catalyst for the future generation.
I am passionate about a variety of subjects including math and Mandarin Chinese. Outside of class, I interviewed prospective applicants in the Pomona College Admissions Office and tutored my peers through the writing center.
I am a native of Texas and decided to move back here to Houston after I graduated from undergraduate. I am very well versed in the mathematics and sciences, able to provide knowledge and comprehension of higher level material as well as a firm, confident foundation of the basics.
I am a student at Rice University working towards a degree in History and English. Every summer I look forward to working with students. In the past, I have taught English, creative writing, nature/biology, and even cooking, but my favorite areas to teach are English Literature and History. I find that teaching children struggling in these subjects new ways of approaching their topic, whether a historical event or a classic novel, greatly improves comprehension, enjoyment of the subject, and test scores. Simply providing a new context for learning can create a better understanding that turns a weak subject into a strength. With all my students, I emphasize a balance between memorized aspects like vocabulary, and analytical skills that demonstrate a more thorough knowledge of them material. Apart from tutoring, I love to cook, write, fish, and play frisbee.
I am currently a junior at Rice University, majoring in biochemistry and cell biology. I am particularly interested in tutoring math, science, writing, and test preparation. I have a strong background in tutoring over many years, and I am very comfortable working with many different kinds of students. My goal is not only to ensure success in the classroom today but to equip my students with lifelong skills that will help them to be successful in the future.
I'm a Junior at Texas A&M University. I was originally a biomedical engineering student, but have since transferred into biology with a minor in sociology. My career interest is in medicine. I have had previous experience with tutoring in high school when I was a member of the National Honor Society and mentored peers to help them excel in their math and science courses. I have also worked for Varsity Tutors for almost 6 months and have helped many students achieve better grades. I love sports, I'm sociable, I'm goal oriented, and can be competitive!
I'm comfortable working with younger students as well as older students.
I am 28 years old and have worked in the oil and gas industry for 5 years as a corrosion engineer.
I am an undergraduate student at Brown University studying mechanical engineering. I starting tutoring in my senior year of high school, and realized that I have a deep passion teaching students how to appreciate math and science. Physics, biology, and math are absolutely fascinating to me and I hope to share my love of these subjects with all my students. My real passion is space; I hope to work in the space industry building rockets and developing the technology that will take us to the stars!
I am a Rice University student majoring in sociology and history. I have been blessed with the opportunity to study with people who truly care to help me develop my passion for studying the human condition and analyzing the events that lead to the formation of modern society. Therefore, I am eager to help those who want to learn by sharing my knowledge in the best way I can to help them grow. I am hard-working, patient, and always maintain a positive attitude. I look forward to working with you!
I am currently a senior at the University of Texas where I will receive my Bachelor of Science in Biology. I have also been accepted into the Doctor of Medicine Program at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. During high school as well as college, I tutored in a variety of subjects including biology, chemistry, mathematics, and the SAT. I'm very passionate about these subjects because I love to think logically, and I think that learning challenging subjects can be very fun! As for my teaching philosophy, I believe that good practice reaps good results. Instead of constantly repeating information, I like to learn and teach topics through practice problems and walking through each mistake that is made. In my spare time, I like to play video game, play pickup basketball, and weightlifting.
As a passionate tutor currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Computer Science at Cornell University, I have over 2 years of experience in guiding students through subjects such as Algebra, AP Calculus AB, and various history courses. As a former AIME qualifier, I am well equipped with teaching the fundamentals of math.My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions and explore concepts deeply. I believe that every student has unique strengths, and I strive to tailor my approach to meet their individual needs, fostering both understanding and confidence in their abilities. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy exploring new technologies and engaging in historical research, which further enriches my teaching practice. I am dedicated to helping my students achieve academic success and develop a lifelong love for learning.
I am absolutely focused on accessibility. I devote my daily life to creating an open and inviting community in which anyone is welcome. I passionately believe in our roles as lifelong learners and do not think that education should stop after a certain age or stop after a certain quota is met. No one should be made to feel that learning is unapproachable! In my "arts life," I founded a pop-up gallery devoted to a democratized sharing of art with consistent workshops, free entry, and discussion sessions. I have also spent much of my life in other countries including England, the Netherlands, and Turkey, and I prize the diverse outlook that has given me. Although my focus has been English tutoring, I extend this philosophy across school and test prep subjects. As a tutor, I approach students with an enthusiastic but professional attitude that focuses on them as individuals. I am always willing to listen and engage in discussion if something is unclear and work together with students to find answers that we both understand and believe in.
I am welcoming and patient with anyone looking for assistance. My experience with Math, Chemistry, and Physics is extensive due to my current studies in Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University
Hello, my name is Destiny and I graduated from Howard University. I majored in Psychology with a minor in Biology and Administration of Justice. One of the most important lessons I've learned from school is the value of asking for help. This can be the difference between simply memorizing some facts and truly understanding the material given to you. In many cases, learning in a traditional school setting is not effective and students should feel free to reach out for extra guidance. I strive to be that source of guidance for all students who need it. I believe that everyone learns in their own way and that the key to helping someone else lies in finding their unique style of learning. I take great pleasure in finding those styles and using them to enrich students minds. My main areas of expertise are Psychology and English. Ive been reading at a college level since middle school and scored 5s on both AP English tests. I also scored a 5 on the AP Psychology exam in addition to receiving As in all my psychology classes. I have extensive experience with essay writing, essay editing, and researching. Other subjects I can assist with include Algebra I and II, Geometry, and SAT/ACT prep. Outside of class, I like to stay busy with school activities and hobbies. I spend most of my time playing the trumpet in my schools marching band or studying. But when I have free time, I typically catch up with my shows or read.
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Houston looking to assist students in strengthening comprehension in subjects vital for college-entrance exams (specifically SAT and ACT). I focus on tutoring in writing and language skills, essay editing, and mathematic subjects. I aim to help students by simplifying subject lessons and emphasizing application of materials learned in order to help students achieve mastery in desired field.
I am both a native English and Spanish speaker. Thanks to living all around, I've found it important to adapt to every individual and find the most comfortable way of teaching and helping, whether that means translating English, Spanish, or math. My B.S. is in Mathematics and I am a current Economics PhD student.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and commitment level, but most students see meaningful gains through personalized instruction focused on their weak areas. Many students improve by 5-10 points or more when they work with a tutor to identify gaps in logic games, reading comprehension, or logical reasoning—the three core sections of the LSAT. The key is targeted practice combined with strategy refinement, not just more hours studying.
Your first session is diagnostic and collaborative. A tutor will review your background, understand your timeline and target score, and likely have you work through a practice section to identify which areas need the most attention—whether that's logic games, reading comprehension, or logical reasoning. This helps create a personalized study plan tailored to your specific challenges rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.
Logic games require a specific skill set that doesn't come naturally to most test-takers—you need to visualize spatial relationships, track constraints, and work through scenarios quickly under pressure. A tutor can teach you proven diagramming techniques, help you recognize game types, and build your speed through targeted practice. Many students find that once they understand the underlying patterns, logic games become their most predictable section.
Timing is one of the biggest challenges on the LSAT—you have roughly 8.75 minutes per logic game and about 8-9 minutes per reading comprehension passage. Rather than rushing through everything, a tutor can help you develop a strategic approach: knowing which questions to tackle first, which to skip and return to, and how to allocate your time based on your strengths. Practice tests are essential for calibrating your pace before test day.
Most students benefit from 3-4 months of consistent preparation, though this varies based on your starting score and target. A typical schedule includes 3-5 tutoring sessions per month combined with independent practice between sessions—working through logic games, reading passages, and full practice tests. Your tutor can help you build a schedule that balances intensive skill-building with regular full-length practice tests to track progress and build test-day stamina.
Test anxiety often stems from uncertainty about what to expect or lack of confidence in your preparation. Working with a tutor builds confidence through repeated exposure to question types, timed practice, and proven strategies—so test day feels familiar rather than overwhelming. Your tutor can also help you develop mental strategies for staying calm under pressure, like how to reset after a difficult section and manage the mental stamina required for a 3-hour test.
Reading comprehension on the LSAT isn't about reading speed—it's about understanding the author's main point, structure, and tone, then finding evidence in the text to answer questions. A tutor can teach you active reading techniques, how to annotate efficiently, and how to avoid common traps like answer choices that sound right but distort the passage. Many students improve dramatically once they shift from trying to remember everything to focusing on the argument's logic.
Look for a tutor with strong LSAT credentials—ideally someone who scored well on the test themselves and has significant experience teaching all three sections. They should be able to explain not just the right answer, but why wrong answers are traps, and adapt their teaching based on your learning style. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors in Houston who understand the nuances of the LSAT and can provide personalized instruction based on your specific weak areas.
